Okay, this is it. The LAST GO with the EVH 5150. It's already back in it's box ready to go away forever.

This time I used the sample settings that came with the pedal and left it at that.

Deluxe Reverb kit build - Normal channel
All the same stuff as before.

"Classic OD" setting:

"Classic Distortion"

"Modern Distortion"

And that's it. Blah.

Well dude, I ain't gonna lie here, these clips are better than the 1st round you posted, but about the same as the 2nd...I'm convinced that's just how that pedal is, & there ain't no dialing it out...

Actually seeing the settings makes me think that pedal is very much like the EVH LBX amp I had, gobs & gobs of gain, even too much for me, which really says something...The only way I could get anything I liked from it is to turn the gain completely off, then adjust it in a small increments as possible...That was aggravating for me because it had so much gain & was just so sensitive to the slightest move/turn...

Now don't get me wrong, I like a lotta gain, & too much could be good, as long as the gain pot has enough sweep to be able to dial in as much/as little easily, but the EVH LBX v1 just didn't do that, for me...

I think you just need to give that thing back to your buddy & call it done with that thing dude...Of course, that's just my :twocents: , but I'm not impressed with that pedal at all...

Right? Lol. This pedal is poo.

Even at it's "Classic" setting it's shit tons of fucking fizzy gain. Nothing classic about it. You can't reduce the gain. It's all distortion all the time.

And wtf is up with the levels? The output has to be damn near 75% just for unity? Dumb. Fuck Eddie Van Halen and all his stupid crap gear. :lollers2:

Yeah man, I don't get it either, no experience with that pedal, but it seems a lot like the LBX amp I had...I might've kept it if the gain pot had a more usable sweep to it where the cleaner sounds could be had easier, but...

Quick question: Mini JCM 800 or Friedman Runt 20w???

I saw the Mini JJ, but not sure on the price, it shouldn't be much more than the Runt 20, but I read somewhere (could be bullshit though) that it was gonna cost like $1500...

That's over my limit on the price for a little amp, & I may not go either route at all...For that much, I could get a nice, full size amp, the only thing is I'd have to be careful with my attenuator...It's supposed to handle a 100w amp, but not sure I'd wanna push it because of the consequences if it shit the bed...

I've been looking at Orange amps again, so I might go that route, dunno man...I've also been looking at DSL100 & DSL40 again. :smiles: ...As much as I'd like to have another Marshall-y amp, maybe what I have already covers all the bases & something a little different may be in order...

Seriously, I keep telling you that the Chupa is probably all the "Marshall" you could want.

No.

I want that 10 minutes back. Yuck. It pains me to know those sounds were coming out of your amps. At least you tried to see if it could sound good. That is about all a guy can really do i think. This particular beast is best left to bedroom small watt combo newbs.

Speaking of combos, our local chain store here managed to get in in one of the 20 watt super leads in combo format. they sent me a couple phone videos that did it no justice, and the one young fellah that works there was giving it a going over when i showed up. however, they just got it out of the box. It didn't sound so bad. It didn't moisten my undies or anything but it wasn't the worst thing i heard.

I know right? Blech.

I did want to give it a fair shot and every opportunity to sound good as best I could. Again, I either can't do it or the pedal just sucks ass for anything other than mushy fizzy high gain for wankers.

Well it is better into a clean channel than it is layered over a dirty channel. That much is for sure. So guys that use clean amps as "pedal platforms" could probably get some good use out of it. I'm not one of those guys. Dirt pedals only hurt me, not help me.

Even though some pretty hardcore pharmaceuticals are pumping through me right now, I'm starting to realize that, although slowly... :lollers2:

I'm still curious about Orange amps too, the OR15 was what I was gonna buy before I discovered the first Chupacabra...

I appreciate the vote of confidence Shan, but if the Gerg can't do anything with it, I highly doubt I could...I keep saying it reminds me of the EVH LBX I had, just way too much gain...When I used it, I stuck 12AU7 tubes in 2 or 3 of the 5 slots to tame it, & it was still too much...

I think the only way I could use that pedal is to use it like the amp I had, turn the gain all the way off & adjust from there, but since Greg has posted a few rounds of clips, I'll just steer away from it...

Totally. you have all the basic holy grail dirt pedals anyways so adding onto that chain seems pretty much pointless really. Did you recently pick up an EP booster? or am i thinking of someone else. I am not sure why i have that in my head?

To be fair to the pedal though, I don't play the spandex riffy riffs that fit the gain voicing of a pedal like this. That style of playing is not in my DNA so I can't properly utilize what a hair metal pedal like this has to offer.

Yup, I do have an EP Booster. And it's okay. I like it for what it is. It's better than the EVH by a billion miles. Lol. But even still, into the Marshalls it's mostly unnecessary for me.

I still like the SD-1 or TS-9 the best if I ever want to kick in an overdrive.

I do think that, generally, pedals must be better now than they used to be. I don't think you'd be able to get away with just slapping a "name" on a pedal that sounds like shit and getting it to sell these days 'cos it would get hammered in reviews.

I think it's just the opposite. I think pedals are mostly shit and as long as it has a cool look or hip name and is boutique-ish it can be popular.
