The Tone Thread
Re: The Tone Thread
Cheers, I'll see if I can find something like that unless Liv comes up with something off the shelf that isn't too expensive.
I've always got a stack of books on the go too - it seems like the only chance I get to read is on holiday now.

Re: The Tone Thread
You do fine on the music you play & like, so that's all that matters dude...I'm just a very basic, very simple blues-based pentatonic-box player & can't do much else, but I don't play music I don't like, basically the same as you, so it's all good...Some guys see this shit as a competition, & I get it, because I was like that for a while when I was a lot younger...But I've came to realize I have limitations a long time ago, so it ain't like that for me now...I just play what I want, & don't worry about it...Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 8:26 am Lol. I do suck at most things. I can't play jazz or country or metal or whatever. But in my own little slice of the musical sphere I'm pretty good at what I can do.
I just wanted to knock something out with the two amps while I got em. And as I suspected, while the amps do have their own things going on, it still sounds like me....even to me. The way I play, the way I dial in my own tones, I can't not sound like me. I'd be pretty disappointed if I was tone chasing and bought a $3500 dollar Friedman and still sounded like me.![]()

I do think these tones sound better than the shootout tones, but those were set pretty wild. I based all those off my buddy's live Jubilee tone which can be significantly different from the best recorded tone.
I wanna hear your JCM 800 "dialed in" like the Friedman/Jubilee since there was such a difference between the 2 sets of clips you posted...

Greg_L I've been meaning to ask about your cab grabber thing...I'm pretty much outta space too & was just thinking about asking you a few days ago, but forgot until Jdude mentioned it again...

JD01 : No problems with vibration or anything dude??? A couple kick stands like Greg mentioned are in order, but the cab grabber thing looks good too...

No - aside from the fact I can't get phone pictures to display in portrait it works really well!
Re: The Tone Thread
Lol...I almost said something about that but let it go because you've been harassed enough about that without me adding to it...

Re: The Tone Thread
It's okay. They barely fit around a B cab. Mine are maxed as wide as they can go and just barely fit....and mine are the big ones. I usually keep them on the bottom, coming up from underneath to mic the bottom speakers when playing live. They're less prone to being kicked or bumped that way...and it does look pretty cool. Lol. But they are a little bit limiting. And the mic arm has to be cranked pretty tight or they can droop if you "cab grab" from the side. They do grab the angled top of an A cab pretty nicely though.

Looks like Audix do an "Cab Grabber XL" for big cabs

Pretty sure I have a basic "Amp Clamp" which works fine

Alright JD01 and Minerman ....Descendents cover take 2. This time with the JCM 800 only. Everything else the same. Same guitar, same cab, mics, mic positions, etc. Same drum, bass, and vocal tracks. I just laid in new guitar tracks with the 800.
Full mix with the 800.
Intro - Same settings as full rhythms - bridge + neck pickups split and rolled off a little.
R Rhythm - amp only
L Rhythm - same as right rhythm, but with an mild EP Boost added set at 9:00 All pulled straight from the mix.

Cool. Cheers mate.
I'll have a listen when I get to work tomorrow.
I've only just got back from my yoga group in time to have a cup of herbal tea and go to bed.

Cool Greg, more baseline/comparison/reference tracks for the "Gerg" folder, plus 2 mixes as an added bonus...I've got clips going back to when we were all at HR when the thread was in full swing there...Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 3:44 pm Alright JD01 and Minerman ....Descendents cover take 2. The guitar tracks are stellar, doesn't matter if it's the 800, Jubilee or the Friedman...The 800 tracks are just a little thinner sounding, but I'd say that's just how the amps really are...Neither is better or worse, just different...
I A/B'd both mixes & the only difference I can perceive is the 800 mix sounds a hair thinner, but again, I'm gonna say that's just the nature of the amp...Again, neither is better/worse, just a little different...
I love having the ability to just plug another amp into an already mic'd cab & these tracks are a great example why...

Re: The Tone Thread
Cool man thanks. If you think the guitars are thinner, it's probably just how I mixed the mics. I have the off axis tracks underneath the on axis. I could easily beef it up by bring up more off axis mic in the tracks.Minerman wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 7:33 pm

The 800 does have less gain than the Jubilee and Friedman or sure.

I'm terrible at describing sounds man, let me just say I hear the 800's "trademark" thing happenin'...It just cuts like no other amp I've heard since I actually started paying attention to things like that...Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 9:41 pm Cool man thanks. You're killin' me...A Mini 800 would look sooo good stacked up with my other amps...

Re: The Tone Thread
Holy smokes have i ever missed a lot.
JD01 not sure if you have followed my cab grabber issue on the twitters but they are a waste of money if you have an Orange cab. Seems to be fine for just about any other cab out there, just not those beefy Oranges. I was going ot offer my Cab GrabberXL up for sale to you twats but it does in fact work on my dinky little bass cab so i will keep it for that.
Greg_L I listened to the first round of samples and my ears sort of favored the Jubilee. The Friedman sounds way darker than i was anticipating. My heart sank a little bit when it kicked in. I wouldn't have thought it was going to come out that dark.
The cover is sounding pretty dope too dude. I haven't heard a good Descendants cover in a very long time. When ever that one get's done and dusted i'll share and tag Egerton in it on the twitters maybe. You never know how people will respond to covers of their song but i know he follows us and interacts with us over there so it might be cool?
of the two versions of the covers i am sort of favoring the first one. I am only listening on my work speakers currently but i like that one. The 800 version of the cover has the Greg factor and the Greg sound, but that first one kind of has a bit of the Descendants vibe, chime and right amount of gain. if you know what i mean. neither of them suck. Just tossing in my thoughts.
second listen i still like the first version. I'll give it another spin later on my monitors. sadly won't be till next week
back to work.

Re: The Tone Thread
Haha, that would be pretty awesome. I gotta take it more seriously if we're gonna do that. Though I'm sure hes' probably heard a trillion bad Descendents covers.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 11:36 pm
