Wow. Same undeniable character but somehow quite different! Mine sounds a little more "driven" and perhaps a little brighter, but I may have been a bit closer to the centre with my mic placement. I may also have my pickup a little higher.
On a second listen, actually I don't think mine is brighter. There's just a bit more drive! That's a little strange.![]()

I checked my gain setting and it's definitely on drive 8. Mine's an earlier model than yours and it's not beyond the possibility that the thing's been twatted about with over the years. It's not enough different to worry over. My other settings were actually slightly different than I said. The middle and treble controls were one notch past 12 o'clock and the bass was one notch rolled off.Greg_L wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2017 9:16 pmThey are made to order, allegedly, so it's possible yours might be hotter than mine. They sound similar, they sound like they are played through the same rig. Bubba's seems darker and it obviously a lot slower. Have you guys got the same cab too?

Re: The Tone Thread
Did you think it seemed darker on the ECW clips? It is a little full on the Homicide clip and the B90, but I didn't think so on the others.

How do these rythm tracks sound? Miner's clips of my guitar playing inspired me to really work on my guitar sound, so I fooled around a bit with a song I just started tracking. Sorry about the drum machine. It will be replaced.
I tried to get a little more meat into my tracks. I gave the amp a little more low end (went from 5 to 7) and turned up the gain (also from 5 to 7).
As is almost the case, we have:
Epiphone SG Bridge on the right
Gibson Neck SG on the left
Fender Super Champ X 2
Sorry about the few seconds of black space at the begnning. I forgot there's going to be another guitar doing the intro that's not there yet.

Definitely meatier. To me, they're bordering on being a little fizzy, and I don't think the added gain suits your style too much. The extra beef is good though. IMO you should split the difference. Keep the bass turned up, but drop the gain back down.rammer24 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2017 11:07 pm How do these rythm tracks sound? Ok, that's cool. I'll try something like that among other things. I didn't realize how much that bass knob does. I never noticed it adding a lot of bass, I usually only noticed it getting really thin when you cut it too much. Now, I really do hear a differnce. The difference between 5 and 7 is surprising.
I might actually try keeping the gain up but cutting the treble and/or the presence. The added gain give me just the right amount of sustain for some of those slow, long chords. I tried a compressor in the chain, but most of them added something I didn't like to the sound, even though they gave me the sustain I wanted.

That's cool. Turning up the gain usually "meats" things up too. I usually cut the bass back on the amp a little if I'm turning the gain up. Or vice versa. I'll dime the bass sometimes on cleaner settings.rammer24 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2017 11:23 pm Ok, that's cool. I'll try something like that among other things. I keep the bass on my amp around 7 or so all the time Rami, that combined with the high end dialed back makes for a really thick sound from my little amp...It has a resonance knob on the back too, I don't use it much, but it's there if I need it...
Rami: If I remember correctly, a while back you were looking for another amp right??? If you're still looking you might wanna check out the EVH LBX II, it's about the same as the one I have, but it's got a clean channel along with the blue (mine has blue & red), with one less pre-amp tube, which would be lower gain...I put some lower gain pre-amp tubes in my amp, & I'm guessing that's about what the LBX II would be...I think it made a great difference in my amp, it's got too much gain stock (even more than I'd ever use), & it's a lot more versatile now...
I got my EVH LBX used for almost half the price of a new one, so you should be able to find a decent deal on a used one if you're still looking...
Something else that helps my tone is my 4x12's...I think you get some fantastic tones from your amp, but I'd bet a 4x12 or even a good 2x12 would make 'em even better...

I think the guitars sound good on this rami. Sounds, the riffing and rhythm sounds immediately like rami, You're keeping great time with your drumming too!
Personally I think you'd be better of playing bridge pickup on both sides, I never use the neck pick up for overdriven rhythm tones though, I always find that it sounds a bit indistinct.

Re: The Tone Thread
Pretty solid, eh?
You know, I might go back to that. The story behind me using the neck pick-up on one side is this. A few months ago, or maybe about a year, while I was banned from HR and not posting anywhere else, I sent Greg a clip of an Alice Cooper tune I was covering. It was the first tune I recorded after really working on my sound. When I sent the file to Greg, I didn't know if I had totally ruined my sound or if it was good. So, I was pleasently surprised when Greg said "Man, that sounds great. If I didn't know I would have thought that was going through my Plexi, etc....". So, I was like "Yes! Finally!!!". So, I've been using that set up ever since. The thing is, it might have been the right sound just for that particular tune. I've just been scared to deviate from that ever since. But before that, I always only used the bridge pick-ups for distorted sounds, too. So, for the next tune I do, I'll try both and see what happens.Personally I think you'd be better of playing bridge pickup on both sides, I never use the neck pick up for overdriven rhythm tones though, I always find that it sounds a bit indistinct.

Re: The Tone Thread
I think the neck pickup works for you because you're not using shit tons of gain. I think it would get muddy and gross in a hurry if you were.rammer24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2017 10:48 am

It might just be that I have the same phobia of it as you used to have! But then I like higher gain sounds than you (in general, contrary to popular belief my sound isn't that hi-gain). As Greg says, if you had both on the bridge pickup you could probably use more gain and maybe more bottom in the sound. Hey, no harm in trying both if you're experimenting with your sound.rammer24 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2017 10:48 am You know, I might go back to that. I think I'm listening to it with my own personal bias thinking that using the bridge pickup you could "get away" with using a bit more gain.
Re: The Tone Thread
Cool, guys. I'll experiment. Maybe the reason I don't use higher gain sounds is because I'm using a neck pick-up. I actually like hard rock, pretty high gain guitar. So, maybe using the neck all the time is holding me back from going as heavy as I'd like sometimes.
Well, that's the good thing about the amount of money I pay for studio time. I can afford to experiment.
