Okay so here is my entry...it is a cover of "The Breakup Song" by Greg Kihn.
I used my Aston Origin LDC for all the recording.
Here is my drum set up for the song, a guitar case, two hanging pieces of cast iron and a steamer pot with a chain on top.

Re: Recording Challenge #5 (One Condensor Mic!)
Thanks man.
The guitar I ran through my ancient Yamaha FX500 effects unit and into a Bugera V5(little 5 watt tube amp).
The bass I ran direct into a Yamaha powered PA speaker and then a line out to the Bugera so it was coming out of both.

musicturtle well done! The pseudo-drum kit sounds great! Nice performance on everything too.

Well this was freakin impressive. Good job MT! Your little drum kit concoction was brilliant? Sounds very 80's!!! Well i think it sounds pretty 80's really i am familiar with the song but not what decade it came out of. The only thing that doesn't really fit the lo fi garage vibe is the vocals. the vocals seem to be tracked perfectly. And when you guitas kick in you really get a feel for for the room the mic is capturing. Kinda lo fi homemade garage rock. It's perfect.musicturtle wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 10:24 pm Okay so here is my entry...it is a cover of "The Breakup Song" by Greg Kihn.

Re: Recording Challenge #5 (One Condensor Mic!)
Thanks @Tadpui and @WhiskeyJack
Yeah I tried to dirty up the vocals a bit with Tube Delay and Tube Compressor plug ins. Maybe could have gone a little further with the drive knobs on those.
This was a fun one though. Got me a bit outa my comfort zone.

liv_rong damn, that's a great looking tracking room! And that at least gives me some ideas about how the heck to mic a drum kit with a single mic. I'm puzzled about how to do that.
Re: Recording Challenge #5 (One Condensor Mic!)
Lt. Bob holy crap that sounds great! It's a great full sounding mix. Nice playing as well, and I like the off-the-cuff song. It's perfect.
MXL is having a strong showing so far in the single-mic category.

Pretty cool, musicturtle.
To me, it sounds like it's in the same family of sounds that vomitHatSteve's puts in his tunes.
I assume the screwdrivers were your drumsticks? lolmusicturtle wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 10:24 pm Here is my drum set up for the song, a guitar case, two hanging pieces of cast iron and a steamer pot with a chain on top.

awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world

Wow! Cool! Interesting chord progression and harmonies. That's amazingly clean recording and nice mixing too.

musicturtle I listened to this on your YouTube channel last night, but this is the first time I have a chance to listen in decent quality.
Brilliant vocal.
Really like the guitar tones - the verb on your palm mutes introduce a good percussive sound in the verse.
Hmmm, I wonder how many of us would have noticed that your kick and snare wasn't real until you pointed it out.
Listening to it critically, I'd say that you could adjust verb and panning on things to make it sound like a "better" mix, but this would actually ruin in. Its got a certain bleakness to it which I really like.
I really like this style of recording, it reminds me of Greg Sage quite a lot. Have a listen to Straight Ahead by Greg Sage and you'll see what I mean.
He was very much a DIY hardcore punk musician in the 80s and into the 90s. But he did a couple of really bleak solo albums that I really like.
