OK ..... I'm in.
I've done enough tonight to know I'm gonna finish the song I'm doing.
It's gonna be sloppy ..... my mixing board is shitting the bed and I'm losing channels.
But I think I have enough to finish.

Question ,,, for electric guitar and bass it's ok to use an amp as long as I record it using that same mic?

Like your voice on this.

What kind of condensor did you use?
Thanks! I used an MXL 4000. No EQ, little compression, little reverb.

It’s funny. I bought it new for $150 almost a decade ago, but it looks like it drove up in price to about $400.

Also, I micd a bass amp for this. I read the challenge as anything goes as long as it’s captured on that mic. So you can technically play an old song on a speaker and record that speaker with the mic, but that wouldn’t go with the spirit of the challenge.

Yup exactly. Everything has to be captured with the same condenser.

5 tracks. All one mic. Lazily edited.

Nice. THat was a fast turnaround!

I'll probably poke at mine some today.

Thanks! Figured it was an easy challenge for me. I’m reading the challenge number 3 thread and it’s hilarious. Especially those who dropped out. I probably would have done the same. I can play the scale, though, so maybe I would have futzed around on a classical guitar and combined it with my sitar. Oh well. Not reviving that thread.

You can. it' is there for posterity for any and all that chose to do so. I may still take a stab at it some day. :like:

Question to further clarify: what about a multi-pattern condensor? (Switches between cardioid, omni, etc.) Can we use all the different patterns if we want, or do we have to pick one pattern and stick with it?

(I haven't decided yet if I'll throw my hat in the ring on this one or not...)
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

I would think part of the challenge is to choose a good mic.
One with different patterns would be a mo' better mic. ..... i.e. You chose well!

Yes. Choose one mic. Go with it.

The challenge is to limit yourself and do something we wouldn’t normally do.

Ooooh, I have a recording challenge idea for the next one. I’ll wait until this one is finished. Well, it’s more like a songwriting challenge than a recording challenge.

Dude, that's really awesome. I could hear something like that coming from Dylan. The kind of melody we all strive for, one that just feels simple and right.

well crap .... it won't let me attach the file .... it says "Invalid file extension" but it's an MP3
That's not invalid so what's the deal?

EDIT: have a workaround .... yay

gotta be some way .... maybe the site?
It doesn't even recognize any of my MP3 files and seems to be looking for custom files.

I've attached MP3s before so it may be me but I don't think so

Edit: Just tried again with a recorder I've used before.
They're MP3 files but when I go to my MP3 folder with the attach button it shows an empty folder and it's trying to download custom files with a huge list of weird acceptable filenames .... if I choose 'All Files' then it will show the MP3 files in the folder but if I try to attach one it says 'invalid file extension'

frustrating ...... I worked a bunch to get a song for this and now I'm quickly losing interest if I can't upload a file ....... poopy.

it doesn't even show MP3 as an acceptable file extension ..... what's going on
Fuck, dude. I dont know anything about this shit. But maybe WhiskeyJack does?

Can you upload it to dropbox or something then post the link? I want to hear this!

Here we go.

This is interesting. If I would have done this with the exact mic 12 years ago, which I did own 12 years ago, it would have sounded like shit. This is just slightly better than shit though. Mic is an AT2020.

I didnt spend much time on any of it, but I attempted to think about mic placement a little, but just found something right away each time and stuck with it. Guitar performances are not great but these challenges to me are a exercise more than anything, not giving excuses though, this is me haha.

EHHHH. HEY WhiskeyJack I GOT THE SAME ERROR AS LT_TITTSMCGEE ( Lt. Bob ), it wont upload these files to this place on the internet.

ok ..... then it's not me.

I could do the dropbox but it'd prolly be weeks before I got around to figuring it out ..... I'll just wait for WhiskeyJack to fix it ..... hurry up mang!!

Imean, if I have to I will ...... eventually but I've loaded songs to here before so it must be a site issue and hopefully will be fixed quicker than I'll figure out anything else.

EDIT: have a workaround .... yay .... actually I'm dumb to not have done this right off the bat .... shame on poor old dumb me!

CrowsofFritz wow man, that's great! Your voice sounds great, that mic did a good job of picking it up. Great song, too. Nice job.

liv_rong That's great as well. Guitars sound great through that mic. Where'd you end up sticking the mic for the drums?
