Can we sample using the mic?
I'm gonna have to do some reprogramming...
I say yes.
Some of us are more limited when it comes to acoustic or live sounds at our disposal.
Mine would be pretty boring if all I could play was my acoustic guitar and my electric through my little practice amp. I could create something, but that is basically what I do all of the time.
I recorded some "drum" parts yesterday with alternative percussion sources. I cannot play them like a drum set so I laid out the sounds in a drum pattern in Cubase.
As far as I am concerned all my sounds have still only come through that mic into my DAW.
Use hand percussion and mic it. You don't have to be able to play the drums or have a 10 piece DW kit. A cardboard box, a suitcase, a Tupperware container, some pots and pans can be percussion, and you can mic them. That's the best part of this challenge IMO.

I think liv_rong said things can be played back through a speaker or some other device and recaptured through the one mic. So i in my mind i think if it were up to me i would give you a pass on all your sample magic assuming you were going to playback and recapture with the one mic?
Anyone else agree with this? or maybe you were speaking about something else entirely?
Those would fall under this veil as well. Things don't have to strictly be a recording technique challenge. A Challenge can be Challenge no matter what it foundation is.

Exactly.. although I have quite an array of toddler percussion
Yeah, I guess technically if you want to argue semantics, you could sample with the mic and then use that but that is not what I was going for. It's not really in the spirit of the thing. That's why I used the example of micing the speaker playing your programmed stuffs. I was attempting to limit our ability here and force us to do something different then we usually do, otherwise what is the challenge? How is using a different sample really a challenge? It's basically the same thing you would always do for drums, use samples to make sounds you hear lol.

Yeah I get what you are aiming at. Although I did spend long enough in my garage yesterday beating on shit to get sounds I like that my wife came out and said "I hope this your new thing." As I was driving her crazy.
I mean typically I would just grab some drum sounds I like from my plugin and make a drum pattern.
In this instance I recorded a few patterns beating on things trying to get them to sound like pieces of a drum set. I used my Origin mic to record them but I did loop them some in my song.
I don't know why I feel like I have to justify myself but here I am anyway
I guess my point is...it is still quite a challenge to not use any sounds from within the box to get what you want. If that is what you are used to doing.

I usually do this anyway lmao so I’ll do it. I think a guitar amp for bass may hurt if the speaker isn’t designed for it, no?
I thought all bass amps work for guitars but not all guitar amps work for basses.
Any amp can work for anything. The limitation is usually the speakers. Guitar speakers, for example, don't really like bass frequencies pumping through them. Bass can damage guitar speakers.

yep .... but, as you know, not if you don't turn them up very loud.
Of course that may be an issue for the less experienced ...... I can hear when a speaker's getting distressed and turn it down .... someone else might not.
but at bedroom volumes you're really unlikely to damage a speaker with bass.

Right. I record bass through guitar speakers all the time. Just not very loudly.
I might have to get in on this. Hell, the only time I use anything other than a condenser mic is when I'm using two mics at once. I have a cajon, so drums are covered, though I won't be able to use a 57 for the "kick". My only real issue is bass, since I always record it direct and don't own any kind of bass amplification. Might have to get my friend to play his upright. That would sound great with the Avantone.

You can play it direct, and play it back solo on your monitoring system and record that.
“Naaaaaaaaaah man. I ain’t touching that mic. That thing’s expensive!”
