I agree. Particularly the bridge humbucker in my crimson. It does exactly what I need it to do.

Re: The Tone Thread
I’m so glad I got a bass amp. I need to learn how to mic it because it sounds a tiny bit boomy, but here’s the Vox T25 micd four inches away with an SM57.
Do you guys generally use different EQ settings when you record vs playing live? Or are they the same for y’all?

Re: The Tone Thread
Ugh, my one ear bud isn't doing me any favors here. I guess i gotta go get some new ones this weekend.
The SM57 will make it a bit tricky. It's not the best for capturing live bass rigs BUT that's not at all to say it can't be done. 57's typically have a very nasal-ish sound on bass. You will definitely need to just monkey around with mic position to find the 57's sweet spot. Also don't be afraid to try using a different axis rather than arrow straight dead on 90 degrees for a bass rig. I had much better luck with my e906 dynamic mic off axis rather than straight onto the grill the last time i recorded bass. Which is odd for me because i never like any off axis mic positions for guitar rigs that i have tried.
Like anything it's just a lot of experimenting.

Is it too late to get your money back? I'm sorry but that amp sounds horrible. You would be better of plugging the bass directly into the soundcard.CrowsofFritz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 12:54 pm I’m so glad I got a bass amp. Re: The Tone Thread
Use a direct box and record that. If you really want to mic an amp, use a kick drum mic. I almost never mic a bass amp, recording or live. If you have a good bass and good tone it should be really easy to get a great sounding bass track recorded direct with a little eq shaping and some mild compression in the box. Just my opinion, of course.CrowsofFritz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 12:54 pm I’m so glad I got a bass amp. Re: The Tone Thread
If you're going for a "vintage" bass tone, it's not bad. It's not far off. You can definitely mic bass with a 57. I've done it about ten billion times. I prefer it. You just gotta find the sweet spot. It takes trial and error.

Re: The Tone Thread
If possible do both. I like to do both. Now. I used to use sims and DI only. But after getting some space to myself i like to Mic and DI. And blend. I find i use very little of the DI'd track mostly to just fill in some bottom that my mic's didn't pick up and a wee bit of sparkle and clarity. The rest is all Mic'd stuff.Bill L wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 2:02 pmUse a direct box and record that. If you really want to mic an amp, use a kick drum mic. CrowsofFritz the fun part is is there is no rules. Keep experimenting with your cab. It's either going to work or not work. At which time you try something else.
Re: The Tone Thread
It definitely has that McCartney-esque sound ..... kinda boomy as you mentioned and that's reducing its pitch definition ..... and some of that is the Hofner thing plus I find flat wounds to be a bit pitch challenged but reducing the bass and playing with mic position should get it dialed in for that specific sound I think you're after.

I’ve tried direct and it sounds like crap. I might need a better interface.Bill L wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 2:02 pmUse a direct box and record that. Yeah, I’ll turn down the bass and the treble up and see what that does.Lt. Im already liking it a billion times more than the DI route I was going. It just sounds better to my ears. Btw, is it possible to quote and reply all of them into one reply or do you just gotta do that @ thing?WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 2:20 pmIf possible do both. I like to do both. Now. If, instead of using the quick reply window and you go into the full editor thing instead underneath the bottom of that screen sort of shows a history of all the message upthread for your current reply, and in those messages you will see a quote button / icon and if you press that it will add it to your current reply. It is unlimited. If that isn't clear enough i'll do some screenshots.CrowsofFritz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 3:06 pmIm already liking it a billion times more than the DI route I was going. Also making those bass and treble adjustments is only half your journey. Don't forget trying to move that mic position around.
Re: The Tone Thread
I thought it was a decent sound. I also noticed that some notes get boomy. To me I think you have the bass knob on the amp dialed up a bit too high. I think backing that off a tick or two might get you a little nicer sound.CrowsofFritz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 12:54 pm I’m so glad I got a bass amp.
