First tone test with the Rivolta Mondata. Such a dumb name. :lollers2:

Rivolta Mondata XVIII - three mini humbuckers
Marshall JMP 2204
All tone controls and master vol - 5
Preamp vol - 7
Marshall 1960B 4x12 Celestion G12-65
AT4047 3" off grill on axis halfway across cone - Shure SM57 3" off grill on axis dead center.
50/50 mic blend
No FX or EQ in DAW

Bridge pickup
Rivolta bridge.mp3
Neck pickup
Rivolta neck.mp3
Bridge+Neck pickups
Rivolta neck+bridge.mp3

My mom called in the middle of all this and I didn't get to the combinations involving the middle pickup. That'l be later.

Same for me Greg_L bridge tone was definitely interesting but that neck bridge combo is really awesome!! Really like that quite a bit. Nice aquisition.

I dont really hear any specific brightness. Im also not in the same room as your bandmates. Definitely agree about the chimey goodness though. Sounds killer buddy.

I want one of their combinatas even more now πŸ˜’πŸ˜”

Cool, thanks guys. I was pretty surprised with the bridge+neck tone myself.

That sounds great, Greg.
I like the bridge clip obviously, cutting and articulate without being grating at all. Unlike you to play arpeggios in the aeolian mode...

The neck pick up is interesting. I find neck humbuckers always sound a bit muddy, but this is really quite clear and bright. I generally use a neck humbucker for relatively hi-gain lead playing.

The two together sounds like they're split to me - is there a coil split on them when you put them together?

When you say your SM57 is "dead centre" you actually mean on the edge of the dust cap, don't you?

I don't appreciate that accusation. You know I have no idea what mode that is. :mad3:

I really doubt it. LPs and SGs do the same thing when you play both pickups together - the tone gets clearer. It's not a "quack" like reverse polarity, but it does get cleaned up. The neck pickup has very mild output, but it's volume is pretty balanced with the bridge pickup.

I mean dead nuts center. If the speaker was a tit, I'd be miking the nipple. :nyuk:

Quite an unusual mic position though.

By itself, yeah, but not really when you're mixing it with a darker mic placement. The large diaphragm mic further out on the speaker balances it out. Either mic by itself doesn't sound all that great, but together I think they sound good.

Yeah, they do sound good together.
I've never tried that as part of a two mic set up, I tried it on its own early on found it sounded, harsh, spitty/scratchy and a bit shit. When I was messing about trying two mics, I never thought to return to it. I always kept my bright mic on the edge of the dust cap, never closer.

I find the natural phase cancellation of two well placed mics is very beneficial. If you do it right it almost always cancels out the fizzy hissy garbage you don't want in the high end. I almost never EQ my guitar tracks at all. I want all of it. The EQ is balancing the brighter and darker mics instead of cutting and boosting.

You obviously want to get the mics in phase as best you can, but it's not that critical unless you're leaving them totally equal 50/50. Once you change the level of either track, even .1 db, you throw the phase relationship out the window. It changes right away. And it's a good thing.

Probably didn't help that I was trying to do it with my Blackstar and one of the mics was my cheapo focusrite condenser.
I should try it again with my current setup at some point but I'm happy with the tone I'm getting just using an i5. I will get around to it at some point.

The i5 is one of the best single items I've bought actually. It did exactly what I wanted it to do

Okay here's the rest of the pickup combos.

Same exact signal chain as clips above.
Rivolta middle .mp3

Rivolta bridge+middle .mp3

Rivolta neck+middle .mp3

Rivolta all 3 .mp3

Listening to both sets of clips...

I think I like the bridge by itself most. But combining it with either of the other pickups worked too.

The neck-bridge combo as well as all 3 was REALLY full sounding.

I preferred the single pickup clips over the combinations. The bridge pickup has a nice sparkle to it, and the neck is fat but clear sounding.

I agree. I don't really care for the combos involving the middle pickup. And it's sometimes in the way. I might just crank that thing down into the body. :lollers2:

That's what I usually do with strats. I always hit the middle pickup with my pick and it gets really annoying.

The middle pick up doesn't really do much for me i don't think. If there was anything it could do is maybe add some depth to some double tracking guitars where something might need some fattening via an addiitonal guitar track? Maybe?

I think i am still quite smitten with the neck+bridge combo and the bridge the best. Will be cool to see how it sounds through your home made amp and verb tank.

I agree. LtBoob said pretty much the same thing. It could be a thicker sort of bridge sound. I don't hate the middle pickup, but here's another guitar with a middle pickup where I just don't care for the middle pickup. It's just in the way. It's tone isn't good enough to make it like "I just gotta use that sound!" Nope. I'm just gonna crank it down into the body.
