The Tone Thread

Greg_L & TripleM ,
I've replaced the NEW file with one that is dry - I wasn't able to reset levels though as I'd deleted the original file.

I think it's good Ray. You're capturing the sound well.
Now, the question in my mind is, what kind of sound are you really going for? You're doing a lot of good experimenting. But what's the tone in your head that you keep looking for?

I think I'm looking for the next thing to spark an idea.
My little spring reverb pedal brought forward two songs and now...?
The question of the moment is whether the Ibanez EQ boost is better than the SD1 + XP boost.
What do I think? Hmm, don't know.

Re: The Tone Thread
I don't know the answer either. That's up to you. I think the gently pushed sound is pretty good though. If you want more crunch from the amp that resists crunching, you might have to go with an amp-in-the-box kind of pedal like an OCD.

Re: The Tone Thread
I dont post here because I dont know what to say. But when I do post here it's because I'm sharing my tones and seeking advise. IN this case I like what I ended up with here, just thought it would be interesting to show the tracks that made that. Well, all four of them did, and here they are.
mk iv is the MK IV channel on my amp being pushed with the ep booster.
The rest are all on the FAT channel on my amp including:
ep booster pushing the keeley ddr
a klone pushing an ep booster
a rat pushing an ep booster

Wow, just goes to show how different things sound when put in a mix...Nothing wrong with the solo'd tones, but they sound fuckin' epic in the mix IMO...
You mention "I dunno what to say", well, dude you just let the music do the talkin' here...I had a listen to the old/new mix, & there's no comparison at all...
Instead of you asking for pointers, we all should be asking you how you made such an improvement Liv, seriously, this is great man, superb job!!!

Btw, I only played drums on the original, so I can only take credit performance wise on that end haha.

Either way it's a huge improvement man...The whole mix sounds 3-D to my ears...

I like em. Sounds pretty cool. Everyone gets better tones out of Mesa amps than I do.liv_rong wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2019 8:26 pm I dont post here because I dont know what to say. I've been messing around with running my amp into cab IRs. Just for shits and giggles I decided to make an IR of my Marshall 1982 cab. It's loaded with G12H30-55Hz speakers (originals from 1978). I mic'd it with a Shure Beta57 up against the grillcloth, straight on middle of the the dust cap.
Signal chain: LP>Carvin Legacy>Palmer PDI-03>soundcard>IR loaded in Reaper.

Sounds pretty good Ocnor, I'd like to have some sort of loadbox for silent putzing around late at night...I'd love to have a Boss Tube Amp Expander because it's an attenuator/loadbox, plus has other features, but it's fuckin' expensive...ocnor wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 4:01 pm I've been messing around with running my amp into cab IRs. BTW, your clip is the first thing I've listened to since re-loading my computer today...I've still gotta re-install Reaper & all the other shit, but so far so good...I took the fans/power supply out & cleaned it all up...Should be like a brand new computer, for a while anyway...
Sounds good dude...

Re: The Tone Thread
I think that's pretty good. Maybe a little fizzy, but that kind of works for the tone and style I suppose. In a mix it'd probably be okay.ocnor wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 4:01 pm I've been messing around with running my amp into cab IRs. I made a few IRs myself....they're not too bad.

Re: The Tone Thread
ocnor that sounds pretty good. I wanted to say it is a bit fizzly but how much of the fizz is the mic placement right up the centre i wonder. I would echo greg in saying the fizz would vanish in a mix like greg said.
Really good job man.

Re: The Tone Thread
Well it is mic'd at the brightest spot of the speaker, and I tend to use quite a bit more gain than you do. If you still have those IRs I'd be interested in testing them out. Did you run through the power section of one of your Marshall amps when you made them? When I made mine it was so fucking loud the neighbors probably thought that I was building a death ray or something.

Re: The Tone Thread
Lol yes! I ran it through the power stage of my JVM. It was wild. It did sound like a very loud death ray.ocnor wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 12:18 pm

I think I still have them uploaded somewhere. I'll get you the links. Mine were mostly proof-of-concept testing, but they work.

Greg, your IRs are good.
