That is genious!!! Good thinking. I never loved those kinds of stands and never would have ever thought of that. Mostly because i didnt ever have a weight bench around lol.
A lot of "pro" cymbal stands and mic stands will have a huge counterweight on the end of the boom arm to balance heavy cymbals/mics. They work really good. They're also heavy and expensive. I like the barbell plate idea. :lollers2:

First run through with the new (to me) SG.

Gibson SG Standard - Friedman Classic bridge pickup - Burstbucker 1 neck pickup
Marshall JMP 2204
Presence - 5
Bass - 7
Mid - 7
Treb - 6
Master vol - 5
Preamp vol - 8
Marshall 1960B 4x12 - Celestion G12-65
Audix i5 dead center - SM 57 dustcap cone - both mics on axis, on grill, mic stand bases not touching each other because I'm not a moron
Mic blend equal 50/50
No EQ or FX

First up, the bridge pickup, run through split and full humbucker through the volume control. Amp unchanged.
SG bridge.mp3

The neck pickup. Same thing. Split and full through a volume range. Amp unchanged.

Sounds good man, but I think you'd get more chunk by allowing the mic stands to touch...Sorry.. :twocents:

Just kidding man, sounds pretty good...It's really bright & kinda stratty with the bridge p'up coil split dude, which is a surprise, but a welcome surprise IMO...The '14 LP Studio I flipped had coil splits, but I really didn't like 'em that much, but, that's just me too...

BTW, does your "new" SG have the circuit board like the LP I sold??? Been meaning to ask, couldn't remember if you'd said anything about it...

On the bridge pickup, I preferred everything about the full humbucker mode over the single coil split tone. I can't put my finger on it, but there's just something off about that split tone on the bridge. Full mode sounds glorious. It's tight and has a good range to it.

The split mode on the neck is much more palatable to me. It's twangy and has that certain je ne sais quoi about a neck single coil. I don't know the official words to describe it, like a bloom to the notes or something.

New SG - split bridge is cool but humming is WAY better.
Neck position is pretty nice - more mellow - a bit Bostonish.

No, it's got normal wiring. No PCB.

Thanks, I totally agree with your assessment. I don't mind the split bridge pickup when it's up full power, but I don't care for it dialed back. Humbucker mode is definitely where the good stuff happens. I'm not too particular about neck pickups - I never use them. Ever. But I was happy with the split neck sound. Sounded surprisingly good to me.

Thanks Ray. I think next I'll shoot it out against my other SGs and the Goldtop just to see where it sits.

That bridge pick up split is doing it for me. I really like that sound. It has a gritty jangle that i i myself would like to have for a few things. Great investment there buddy boy.

Thanks man. I didn't even know it had splits when I bought it. :lollers2: :spacepalm:

I've been using it with the warp-speed punk band. It's a pleasure to play. So fast and easy. For that musical project it's definitely got an advantage over the Les Pauls.

Yeah I've been playing in this super fast, kind of sometimes heavy, damn near hardcore punk band project. It's really new. They played one gig as a three-piece before I got there, but now with me it's two guitars, bass, and drums. I'm the "lead" guitar, if you can even call it that. The songs are pretty fast and we play very very loud. Lots of time and tempo changes crammed into two minute songs. Very very good drummer. I wouldn't even bother with something like this if the drummer didn't kick ass, and he does. It's still sort of rough around the edges, writing new songs and adjusting old ones, but if we can get this thing tight it will be pretty powerful. I think the new SG will be my main weapon for this project. It's perfect for this. The other guy plays a Les Paul and a JCM2000 halfstack, so my SG/more vintage Marshall sound will be a nice contrast while not being too different. Lots of guitar madness happening in this band. Right now I'm leaning towards the SG and the JMP 2204 as being "my sound" for what I'm doing in this band. We'll see how it goes. Our next gig is Aug 2nd.

that sounds delightful. Probably a good workout too. Bands like that require a kick ass drummer or else it's just a mess. And i don't see you partaking in anything that messy. Very cool dude. I look forward to hearing this.

So on a scale of NOFX to Propaghandi where you figure you fall into? I hate to play the "who do you sound like" card but best guess what kind of stuff you figure best compliments what ya'll do?

Honestly, this band is gravy. It's easy. The speed and changes are no big deal on guitar. The drummer definitely has the hardest job in this band. He's busy. I'm just playing fast rhythms and some junky leads. No sweat.

I'm not sure. It's not as bright and poppy as NOFX, not as proggy and dorky as Propaghandi. Just off the top of my head I think it's more like Zeke.

Greg, just getting around to this.
The split bridge pickup isn't really doing it for me - its just like a ropey imitation of a real single coil - don't suppose you'll ever use this setting and if you want a single coil bridge sound for surf its not like you're short of options is it.

The humbucker sounds great actually (Oh, that's a song of Bastard..)

Now I really like the split neck-pickup. Its actually a sound I use a lot too. I generally don't like neck humbuckers that much, except for slow highish-gain lead stuff.

I think this neck humbucker sounds pretty tidy though and its nice to have a bit of murder at the drive in!

You think its possible to easily wire a guitar to that the split only works on the neck, and no matter where the push pull is the bridge bucker is always engaged?

Thanks man. I never use either humbucker split so it's not that big a deal to me. I didn't even know this guitar had splits when I saw it online and bought it. That feature was not in the description.

I think all that would depend on the control layout. On something like four-control Gibson or Tele Custom that would be simple - just use a push/pull on the neck vol or tone pot. On something that shares vol and tone pots I think you'd need to add a toggle.

Not really. Maybe, but that's a long ways off. They have a few rough demos that were recorded somewhere else. I'd really like to be the guy NOT recording the band for once. I'd love to just show up with a guitar and an amp and get recorded without having to do it myself. I've daydreamed of a time where I just show up, record my parts in one take each, and leave. That must be nice. I need to see that this band is going to stick around. It seems like they are. These guys have known each other for like 20 years. I'm the outsider in this group, so the core chemistry is there. And the songs have to get better and we have to get better playing them. We can go bash our way through a punk rock gig right now. I'd say we aint ready for recording yet though.

Nope, not really. I know for a fact that I'd make a better sounding record than pretty much any of the smaller/budget studios people use in this town. I hear local people's EPs and singles all the time and they're usually not that great. It's always either overhyped artificial sims and samples or total lo-fi garage-fest. This band has to record live though. I'm sure as fuck not mapping out time and tempo changing click tracks for the drummer.

I am amazed peole even bother with that now a days. there are so many guys like us that could do it, albeit a bit unconventionally, for the same , maybe a little less cost to the musicians and they'd walk away with a much better product. Bigger studios have their place but like basement sized outfits?? not worth it imho. Do it yourself or find a DIY'r that gives a shit.

I agree. The small budget studio used to hold a valuable place in the grand scheme of things before rampant at-home digital recording really took off. It's like anything else in life - the middle class is being killed off. They were the middle class. Now it's either do it all yourself, which I am in favor of, or true-pro mega-studio. I find a surprising number of musicians though that simply just don't give a shit about recording. They don't like doing it, and they don't want to do it themselves. They don't like anything about it. That's where a clown like me comes in. I will record people at their most bare minimum. I'm not their producer, I don't care if their gear sucks and they sound like shit, all I'm doing is recording what they are warts and all.
