Idiotbox Hantaun (Klon Klone)

Post by WhiskeyJack »

Having been lusting for a Klon Centaur for years now and realizing i'll likely never have one i went down a rabbit hole last year looking for a kit to put together. In my search for kits and reviews i came across a Klon Klone pedal shoot out video and found some surprising results.

To make a long story short you know what one i chose by now but the only other one there that got my ears pricked up was the Ceriatone Centura. The Ceriatone one i think hit it right on the head in terms of a clone, but it was a bit more then i want to spend on a pedal AND the enclosure was just too much of a carbon copy and that doesn't really do it for me. Weird eh? I want a clone but i don't really want a spitting image.

I went with the hantaun for my Klone only because it is Star Wars schtick. That is it. I wish there were more to my choice other than that but I'd be lying to you if i stated any other reason. It's just a pedal. A boost / overdrive at that. It's just a really fucking cool one to me. Case Closed. Hantaun. lol. :spacepalm: Matt at Idiot box was put on this earth for the sole purpose of delivering to me a dream piece of gear :lollers: :lollers:

I am going to give it a spin here this afternoon and get a feel for it. You can bet it will make an appearance on my Recording Challenge #2 in some form or another.

Matt @ idiotbox was a treat to deal with. very friendly. A little slow on the response time but i he apologized up and down and said that his surprise pedal of the month club took off better than he had anticipated and has really slowed down his everyday stuff. It happens i suppose.

Incidentally as a cool point, i guess he shipped me the first Hantaun with the new blue color on it. It used to be a blue sparkle enclosure but now it is the official "Empire Strikes Back" blue. :like:

Here is a few little snips warts and all.

First impression is about on point with what i thought i would find. There is some coloration to my guitar signal even at unity but if i had to describe it i would just say it sucks a little bit of of the heardroom out of the tone and beefs up the bottom end a wee bit. This is at unity so there is alot of +/- tweaking a guy could do to make a pretty cool tone out of it. Clean or Dirty

~BUT~

Compared to what i have been working with with my only other OD pedal, the Boss BD-2, it the Hantaun blows it out of the water and chances are i am just going to sell the BD-2. :lollers2:

Lp Jr Bridge P90, Orange AD30 Clean Channel, V30's even blend of of a 57 and e906

Master 5
Treb - 10
Mid - 10
Bass -10
Gain - 1

Each pedal is set to unity with the gain knobs at 0, first clip as the name implies is just guitar+amp.

20190330 Naked LPJr.mp3
20190330 Hantaun at Unity.mp3
20190330 BD 2 at Unity.mp3
Curious to know what you all think other than i need to get more creative with my soundbites.

EDIT: Here is the pic of the settings for reference.

Also if you wondering why i dimed the tone stack it has a lot to do with how the EQ works on this amp. It is a subtractive EQ, so i figured leave it all right where it is to keep the sound coming from my pickups and pedals to be as close to "as is" with out flavoring them one way or the other.

Not too bad, but it doesn't show too much. IMO those pedals are best suited for pushing an amp that's already a little dirty. Try it with the amp crunching a tiny bit, then slam it with the pedals. Get the pedal volume up a little so it's boosting and dial in a trickle of pedal dirt.

Greg_L Armistice that is the plan. This exercise was more of a find out what it is doing to the signal kind of deal. Im pretty happy with how it responded. I woas kind of worried it might get way too colored as a cheap clone. I had mo keyed around with a soul food before and i hated the thing. It was gross. This guy responds totally different.

I didnt say anything to yall but i ended up buying that traynor amp last fall when they found me a replacement for it. Its a really good amp and has a tremendous amount of headroom and and i love they way it sounds a few minutes past breakup but it is not quite where i want it. If i try to push it harder it gets weird and decidedly cheap sounding. The spark helped but i figured a good overdrive may help it out. Thats my next stop on my tone journey.

Armistice the bd2 was only ever used on my bass and a few leads here and there that i dont know you guys ever heard. Its great on a bass to simulate a bit of drive on a smaller rig but i am not sure it has a place much else.

Jesus fuck, Shan! You're not giving us much to go on!

The Klon sounds the best to me. But give us a bit more, strum some big open chords, chug out a powerchord sequence!

I agree with the others though - use a little bit more of a crunch in your basic straight into the amp tone.

I don't mind the amount of gain in the Blues Driver (seems gainier than the Klon) but its pretty buzzy.. and I normally like Blues Drivers.

For sure the OD portion of the tinkering is coming soon. I will work it into a practical exercise with RecChal#2 I am hammering out some better drums today and tweaking some of the arrangement. I lost a bit of time this week with family shit in the evenings so i am already behind a bit on my tw oweek deadline i gave myself but i am way further ahead than i thought i'd be so that's cool. Kind of stoked on how it is turning out.

The short clip was intentional. So that Y'all could A/B sterile sounds pretty quick back and forth in short bursts and the tones were fresh in your head. This is all assuming you guys autopsy tones how i do? I like to A/B common points of your tones. Very short quick sonic attacks to my ears so i can identify the differences in each. Assuming it is just a tone requiring commentary. Very rare for me to autopsy a tone and sit through two and half minutes of riffing unless feed back on arrangement as well or structure is needed. Usually though i'll just A/B 5 to 10 seconds of a tone clip back and forth multiple times. Maybe i am doing this all wrong :lollers2: :lollers2: :lollers2: :spacepalm:

That's pretty much how I do it. I listen to the whole thing, but then when A/B-ing, I flip back and forth. This site's awesome media players make that easy to do. :shred: :coolstorybro:

Kind of eh. If i was more into the whole pedal and effects thing i wouldn't think twice about it. Buddy makes some really wonderfully reviewed products.

I've been looking for a Klon for ages now but they're all really expensive. The Archers are about 150 quid in the UK... so I just bought a Han Taun.
