The Tone Thread
Re: The Tone Thread
Finally back at my desk where I can listen to this properly - sounds great.
Just listened to Milo Goes To College too. Some of the songs are good, but its a pity the recording sounds so dated. Hope is still my favourite track off that album. Dunno whether it actually sounds better than the other songs or its just that 'cos I know it better than the others.
Re: The Tone Thread
Thanks. I'm gonna redo some stuff and do a better job (bass and vocals) since it actually came out halfway decent for a quickie.
Milo Goes To College is one of the seminal punk albums of the 80s. It's not even debatable. Even the most snooty hardened punk rock purists agree on "Milo". In many ways it set the standard for hardcore with melody. It has both. The recording is what it is. Most of those early 80s punk albums have that low budget garage sound because they were recorded on low budgets in a garage. Lol. I don't know if they would be the same with modern Foo Fighters production. I remember listening to Milo at 15 years old and not thinking anything about the production. I just thought it was awesome.Just listened to Milo Goes To College too. Some of the songs are good, but its a pity the recording sounds so dated. Hope is still my favourite track off that album. Ha thanks, I guess it's from all the drumming.
There used to be an arcade game when I was a kid called Track and Field where you had to tap buttons really really fast to do good. I ruled on that fucking game. No one ever beat me.

Yeah - I totally agree with how good the songs are.Greg_L wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 10:49 am Milo Goes To College is one of the seminal punk albums of the 80s. It's not even debatable. The first time I became aware of them was in the early 90s. Sublime had done a cover of Hope that was on a surfing film.
Although I remember having Against The Grain in the early 90s and loving it. Then when I got the 80-85 Bad Religion set I was gutted 'cos the songs were great, but they just sounded shit when compared to the newer stuff.
That's one of the reasons I got a bit obsessed with recording Along The Way a little while ago - I love the song, but it has typically early 80s garage production.
Re: The Tone Thread
Lol. Yeah, Against the Grain sounds like it was recorded today compared to the stuff just 5-8 years before it.JD01 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 11:10 am

Listen to mid-90s Descendents "Everything Sucks" compared to "Milo". Huge huge difference.

JD01 Greg_L I started a cover of myage a few years ago and disbanded it. I may pick it up again should time present itself. It's a tough one.
I think in my scene hope and bikage were the most covered songs that weren't misfits jams. those two bands were the biggest influence on me and my buddies when were transitioning from bedroom / road trip listeners to "hey let's start a band" I think i recall a night where we just played hope and astro zombies back and forth for HOURS!!!! those were the first songs we 'nailed' as young fellahs.

Astro Zombies is still one of the greatest songs of all time in any era in any genre period the end.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 1:17 pm @JD01 @Greg_L I started a cover of myage a few years ago and disbanded it. I may pick it up again should time present itself. It's a tough one.

It's all good. Descendents are a great band. They don't really have any stinkers. And Bill Stevenson is a fucking legend. His musical resume is pretty significant.

All right, ya'll. I know I dont post much in here, and Ive explained why before, I just dont have much of anything worth value to comment on your already good sounding tones. But I am here again for you to hear this thing I made this morning and would like you opinion. I think it's probably the best dirty tones I have achieved. I thought the main riff sounding like the Pumpkins but then I looked for it just now and its like a total rip off of it haha, oops.
I used the Rat and the EP booster into the Fat channel on my amp for one track and the EQD Black Ash and the EP booster into the Clean channel for the other. I did bump the mids a touch on those tracks in the mix.
I literally just threw this together this morning and mixed it before and after lunch, so there are timing issues. But I am here for the toanz. I used my new noise cancelling headphones to help find the right spot on the cabinet, and it worked ok. The most interesting part is I am kind of learning to recognize that the bass guitar will help fill in some stuff so I am dialing back on the lows for the guitar tracks.
The first is the full mix, the others are just as the file name says but no eq, just mic on cab. Its funny because to me because each individual guitar track on its own doesnt sounds too good but all together it sounds big to me.
Thanks for any comments.

Sounds good to me Liv, very grunge-y, which in this case ain't a bad thing...It's got a raw energetic sort of feel to it man & that makes it sound loud to me...liv_rong wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 3:21 pm All right, ya'll. Solo'd you're right, the tracks don't sound at all like they do in the mix, this is probably the best example I've heard of this in a long time...
Just curious, how far out are your guitars panned in the mix??? They sound a bit "narrow" to me...
Cool stuff dude...

I have the guitars panned at 38%. Should I go more?
I did another quick mix of this, I think it sounds better. I did not change the pan, but if you think I should I definitely will give it a shot.

This has the same overall vibe dude, maybe just a hint "cleaner" if that makes any sense??? It still makes me feel like it's just loud as fuck...liv_rong wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 7:02 pm Hey, thanks man! I agree, I think the reason I like it so much is that it sounds raw and dirty.

You could pan 'em out a little wider just to see if you gain/lose anything, but it sounds fine to me dude...I'm a weirdo when it comes to panning guitars...

A wider pan mix for Minerman, at 60% now.
More to your liking? I think I like it better the other way. What do you think?

Re: The Tone Thread
Firstly, Liv - I really like the song. This is exactly the sort of thing I would buy if you finalised it and had a good singer.
I agree that it just sounds pretty big in the mix - there's a lot of space being filled out there with a big variance in tone.
I actually really like the sound of the tone with the RAT - think it really works well. I don't like the sound with the Black Ash much though.
I prefer the wider panned mix, but it draws more attention to the Black Ash.
The guitars sound good as they are though in this mix.
If it were my mix, I'd double track and hard pan RAT tones using two different guitars. Then also double track and Black Ash tones (with the same two guitars, but swap sides), gradually bringing up the volume until they're really starting to fatten up and thicken out the tone, but not bringing out the harshness.
Might not work, but it would be fun trying it. I did this recently and thought it sounded really good.

Re: The Tone Thread
I'd go even wider. Full 100% left and right. The drums sound better with your wider mix, so keep going even wider. Wider guitars might help open up the drums more.
The tones sound like proper typical 90s tones. I'm not a fan of the Black Ash sounds, but the Rat track sounds pretty good. Surprisingly good, actually.

Greg_L and JD01 , thanks for the feedback. I agree the BA sounds the worst of the two but I kind of set it up to be a bit more harsh, though it is on its own a bit anyways.
But, here is a 100% pan on those guitars.

Now the guitars sound really big and pretty good to me (mix is pumping like hell though!)

I know have my eye on this 99p beast on eBay
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sheridan-Les ... rk:27:pf:0
Also just had a look at Les Pauls on eBay. The ones from the 1990s to about 2010 all seem to be going for 1200-1500 quid, so they're clearly holding their value. The cheapest ones seem to be the wide neck ones 2016?
