OK, so I've reduced the gain a lot as suggested and I've moved the guitars around so I now have one of each guitar on either side of the mix - I think its made quite a big improvement so far although I might have reduce guitars 3 and 4 in volume when I add the lead guitars in.

Greg & minerman,
Thanks.
I was tooling about trying to find a clean jangle/chiming tone. not so much chime at this point BUT I'm getting there. i'll record the settings so that, if & when, I need the tone I can set up for it.
Yes, very clean isn't it but, as stated, just learning bits as I'm in no hurry and these guitar tracks won't be going anywhere except the bin.
I'm rather shocked at how well the Teleclone, (AUS$80 delivered), has worked after a little fret filing.
It's not a tool I'll reach for but it's in the box now rather than underneath stuff at the back of the bench.
I might look at the selector switch soon and try to get the bridge selection sorted.
Cheers

Well i got my computer set up and the 18i20 installed i`ll give it a listen on my cans till i can get my monitors and room focused. Man i missed this thread. listening on ear buds or my phone is not the same.

Telecaster Clone input I less preamp and a little more MV.
I ran the Tele into a cheap Comp pedal that adds a little high end with a little chime.
I also added two Fender acoustic 12 string tracks underneath it all to see if that helped.
Arranging the electric guitar tracks to fit but not clone was interesting - choppy rhythm on one side and straighter strum on the other.
Arp guitar in choruses.
Is this getting closer?

I like this Ray. Maybe a bit more bite on the tele tracks. Unless you were shooting for a 100% clean tone in which case i'd say you kind of nailed it. But overall a bite more bite may lend well to the song and it's feel.

I would sort of be curious to hear the same thing without the 12 strings sitting under it. i didn't really notice and also struggled to hear them until they sort of lept out in certain places. Was the idea of the 12 strings to life up the tele sounds ? or was it there for the purpose of having the 12 strings there ?

This is one is far better than the "Tue Jan 01, 2019 11:27 am" post. Sounds a bit tighter and more together or seashellish. I think your experiment is worth it if you are getting something out of it JD i think what you got for a tone works with the vibe you are chasing down with that song.

Just to comment on what Greg called 'seashellish' i call 'milk carton' tone. It just sounds carton-y. I have never understood what causes it but i just know it when i hear it and this is the only time i have heard it on any of JD's tones that i can think of.

Cheers guys, probably gonna be next week before I get back into this now, to put the lead guitars on it.

Regarding seashellish - could be down to the telecaster. I never normally use single coils for this sort of thing.

Could be man? I always thought it could be a mic placement thing. There is this old metal song one of my buddies always used to listen to that had the WORST milk carton guitar tone. I'll post so you can hear what i am hearing.

Cool song JD.

Lol. No. It's not the Tele. It's the blend of tracks and misapplied reverb giving a false sense of being out of phase - even though they're two distinct takes and tracks. They're similar enough and stacked enough to sound out of phase-ish. And what does out of phase sound like? Listening to a seashell.

Science!

Cool, that’s probably why the 2nd one with less reverb sounds better. I noticed in the post I said less gain. I meant reverb.

I think your latest one sounds pretty tidy too - there still seems to be a bit of muffledness to it, but I don't think that's the guitars. Sounds like its more to do with the drums to me.

^^^^^^^^^^^ I would agree with this^^^^^^^

I quite like the sound you got there though. I would just dial back a bit more reverb personally.

Shan,
here ya go - no 12s and a bit of extra swishness with a guest lead guitar part just to make it luvverly...
Yes, the 12s were to give a bit more jangle support but I don't think they added much of anything except callouses to my fingertips.

Cool!

I don't hear any extra jangle or jangle enhancements at all but i do get a sense of depth / faux delay on the 29122018 clip with the 12 string in it. The 030119 clip just sounds cleaner and bit tighter with out the 12 string really. They could both work really depending on what feel you wanted to go for i suppose. You got them in the there so it's better to have than to have not.

Shan,
here's some jangle returned. I'd muted the arpegg guitar track on the last one.
This is Teleclone L & R with arp gtr to the side in choruses balanced by Greg's lead in the other.
Greg's lead is up centre for intro, solo & outro.
He's doing some tracks to bring this thing up to scratch but I've nicked the solo to enhance my Teleclone tone experiments.
This track will disappear shortly.

This is great Ray, there is a slight difference from the last clip, but both are good dude, so it's a personal preference thing again...

Time to get real lol! I need to get my dirty tones better, so Im here for help from the experts. This is a clip from the 2 chord challenge. I have two versions in the mix here, one with EQ changes and one without with the panning at 45%, then I have each track on its own with no EQ just raw guitar. Im not sure what else there is to know, but if you want to know something specific I can answer. The screen shot is of the eq settings I used, the one on the left is the left guitar and the right the right.

Couple few things....

1) Why are you hacking off all of the top end and upper midrange? You need that stuff with fat heavy tones.
2) Use a better EQ plug. A sweepable adjustable parametric EQ will really help you out.
3) They're not that bad. You have the gear, you just need to refine your process.

Where are you putting the mic? And what mic are you using?

Messing around with eq wasnt getting me anywhere and I foound this (pictured below) to get me started. Maybe I got a little carried away. I used to use the eq plugs that came with Reaper, I still can. I need to find a good tutorial on them. As for the mic this one is an e906 about midway between the center and edge, slightly off axis pointing towards the edge. I typically use the 57 but I was having issues with some clipping which turned out to be my headphones but at that point didnt want to switch the mic back.
