At least now you know when, where, what, why & how.
Yeah, for this little hiccup. No telling what else is waiting for me.

The lame thing is this mistake was amazingly basic and stupid. Lol. Just a boneheaded error that I had right to begin with and then fucked it up by over-fiddling with it. :mad3:

I can tell you this - that will never happen again. I don't know how many other amp builds are in my future, but I GUARANTEE I'll never install a tube socket backwards again.

meh .... mistakes happen.
I have personally soldered 1/4 jacks on each end of a bunch of cables only to notice I hadn't put the caps for the jacks on the cables before soldering everything up.

:lollers2:

that's how you learn ....... I'm pretty impressed with the job you're doing and I don't impress that easily

Lol. Thanks. In my defense this is supposedly one of the absolute hardest kits to do. This thing is rated a 5 out of 5 on the difficulty scale. I don't know it compares because I've never done one before.

But I do know that compared to one of my Plexis or JCM 800, this thing is like astrophysics. :lollers2:

So you blew a couple caps up...Big fuckin' deal Greg, this is your first build man, & it's a learning experience...You've lived/learned & you'll move on...You've learned about wiring the tube socket up the right way, & I'm positive it's burned into your memory dude, so that'll never happen again...Sometimes when we learn the hard way, it's the best way...Don't beat yourself up over it dude, you'll get it up & running...

I'm still really impressed at how the whole thing looks, very neat & very tidy dude...Keep after it man, it'll happen... :minernuggs:

Ha thanks guys. It was actually kind of funny. I mean, yeah, it sucks, but those caps went kaboom! Sounded like firecrackers. I wish it didn't happen, but if it had to happen, that's how I'd want it to happen. Kapow!

It's okay. New parts are coming and I'll be back it soon enough.

Yup, real good. But I aint gonna lie....this fucking amp has been in the back of my mind the whole time. Lol.

I'm sitting in a kayak in a bay early on a tuesday morning, no one around for miles, just me and the pelicans, we're all trying to catch fish, and I'm replaying this whole build in my head trying to think of where else I went wrong. :lollers2:

haha, yeah. I get shit like that too. Whenever I have a job to do I just can't relax until I'm getting on with it. I was in the middle of building a load of cupboards and shelving and we went for an evening away - I was just mentally designing furniture in my head the whole time! :spacepalm:

Well buddies, new progress to report....

First thing was flip and re-wire the rectifier socket PROPERLY.
Image

Then I replaced the two wasted filter caps with these F&T caps. Same values, just bigger.
Image

Pilot light works....but it worked before the filter cap explosions, too....but this is a good sign.
Image

I'm not messing with that stupid copper cap anymore. I got a real rectifier tube for this thing....and it's alive. GZ34 tube.
Image

At this point I'm already farther than I was before. I'm getting proper, expected voltages at the four filter cap nodes now. Even with the incoming voltage down low from the variac, things are acting as expected, so that's good. And with it wound up to full power and only the rectifier tube in place, I'm getting good voltages everywhere I should be, so far. So in go the preamp tubes. The first three did not light up at first, but a little jiggle on the fourth tube got them going. I think I have a shoddy solder on V4's heater wiring so I'll need to address that. But they are on for now. That's an easy fix.
Image

So the rectifier is rectifying, the preamp tubes are lit up like it's Christmas, and the plates, cathodes, and grids are getting expected voltage readings. A double check on the bias, so what the hell.... in go the power tubes. And the most beautiful sight ever, they're all glowing nicely.
Image

Nothing has exploded, no tubes are red plating, the bias is good, so with nothing plugged in I turn the volumes up. I get a very very slight faint hiss from the speaker just sitting face down on the table. I'm not sure if that's awesome or terrible. I'm hoping the amp is so quiet that it's awesome. So I grab a guitar, and..... :eep:

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :punk: :punk: :punk: :punk: :punk: :punk:

The amp makes sound! Guitar sounds! Fender amp guitar sounds! :yeabuddy: :yeabuddy: :yeabuddy:

I tried the normal channel and vibrato channel. Both work. And at this point it is shockingly quiet....as in no noise. There's no weird hums, pops, or hissing. Just getting sound from the speaker is a massive win. Never mind if it's good or bad sound at this point. Any sound is good. :coolstorybro:

So we made a huge step today. Next will be to test the reverb and tremolo. I hope they work.
