So we had 3 JCM 800's and 3 4x12 cabinets. Marshall Crenshaw was doing the singing and he was playing a Mosrite 12 string. The band sounded really good and, with the exception of the bass player, we're all cool dudes.

We had Junior Marvin and The Legendary Wailers come trough the venue where I work recently. For this gig, we supply all of the back line (Keys, amps, drums, etc). He always asks for a backup guitar and this gig he had my '74 Strat as his backup. He ended up using it for a good portion of the show. After sound check, he was trying to take a pic of the guitars and amps. He couldn't get his flash to work so I offered to take the pic and send it to him. So I now have his number :punk: . He actually called me while I was having dinner to thank me :lollers: . He was also nice enough to take a pic with my bobblehead (and then insisted on me being in one as well). It's my 3rd gig with guys and they are a lot of fun.

I saw Jnr with Bob & the Wailers in 78 or 9. Before that the Clash introduced me to him via Police & Thieves...he's cool.

That's cool!

I feel like some former members of the Wailers and some former members of The Grateful Dead should get together and form some confusingly-named supergroup.

There are lots of acts touring now that should do the same; in all genres! If only for the laughs.

Whoops I've confused Marvin with Murvin.
Well, I did see Marvin with Bob n Co. & I did buy the Murvin album after the Clash Debut brought him to my attention. All these years of confusing the two dudes. SORRY Murv & Marv.

Recently had a band I can't recall hearing, The Samples, come through the venue recently. We went out before the show started and the 5 of us (except the drummer who doesn't smoke) got good and stoned. We go in and I tell them 3 mins. I get behind the monitor desk and.....wait. They eventually come out. The guitar player hits the first chord ... and he's amazingly out of tune :metal: :lollers2: . It took them about 4 songs to pull it together and the rest of the set went well. Though throughout the show the band leader couldn't remember what the key was in a number of songs. So then they do an intermission and ask me if I want to go out and smoke again. I would normally have agreed but I had gotten so many texts from the FoH guy (he works with me, not for the band), the artist relations manager and the house manager inquiring as to what was going on at the beginning of the show. :lollers2: My initial response was "This might be my fault. I got them really stoned". :lollers2: Here's a pic from my seat.
PXL_20241109_022621107.jpg
And Sat night we had the Glen Miller Orchestra in. A bunch of horns, keys, bass, drums and 3 vocal mics. Their band leader/Tour manager refused using our gear (Midas M32s) in favor of their Behringer X18r which he would control the 4 live mics on stage and their monitors. Basically he sent us a stereo mix. They, of course, forgot to take into account the keys (rented from us) and where how they would be heard; or even how he might hear himself. So we take care of it with a wedge for him and up our input count to a whopping 4 inputs. The band leader tells us to not feed the subs as they won't need that. During sound check I noticed that you couldn't really hear the bass and he's using an amp. I'm on stage when the band leader tells the bass player that he's too loud. He responds with "I can't even hear myself!". So after sound check, I wander up on stage and take a direct out from his amp. Up to 5 inputs now and we sent that to FoH and we at least had some control over the sound. Very unprofessional for a band that showed up in a tour bus and should know better. But I do enjoy that music so it wasn't a total loss. Just wasn't going to sound like it should.

Here's a pic

I should also add that I've been multi track recording all of the shows there when I can. And I have these plus a bunch more. If I can't multi track it, I try to get an audience recording. Some funny moments have been had. If I get motivated enough to mix some of them, I'll upload them here.

It always amazes me when people can play great while stoned. I could not. I sucked ass.

I sucked ass drunk, too.

I can't get so stoned enough that I would get slow or out of tune or forget anything.

A very good friend, back when I also drank, told me once: I've seen you FUCKED up .... but I never saw you when you couldn't play"
I could even play on acid without messing up.

At one of the jamfests 20 years ago I was drunk and on stage and Chris Harris and EZ and a couple others were off to the side and Harris said, "How does he do that? It's like the drunker he gets, the better he plays!"
I don't drink these days and though I can play without being stoned I can't imagine why I would want to ..... lol

I definitely have some stories ..... I'll have to go through this thread and see which ones I've told already

I'm usually pretty good at playing either stoned and/or drunk. If it's a "real" gig, I don't push that limit. I suppose I just got used to it playing ice hockey back before I stopped playing.

The social part:
So the night after The Samples we had Matisyahu (again, someone I had no recollection of but some of my friends were familiar with him and even casual fans). I did not offer to smoke with him before but we did discuss sharing a bowl at some point. We didn't; but he insisted on my checking out this wonderful weed of his. So he gave me a couple of buds. It was fantastic.
PXL_20241113_033942132.jpg
The working part:
In this case, his FoH guy insisted on using his X32 Compact. He could have just loaded his scene from that desk and put it in ours but he wouldn't. More work for us  Matisyahu had his vocal go to a looper, which he was controlling on stage (including his delays, reverbs and the level of the various loops). The guitar player has a looper for his guitar and a vocal mic. It was somewhat difficult to get the monitors right based on which each wanted to hear. There was lots of low end building to the point of loud feedback (most likely from the subs feeding the vocal mics summing with the monitors). At various times I actually pulled the monitors out completely. And I'm not sure the band even knew I did it :lollers: . Of course, they just might be used to it. :lollers2:

Another hilarious thing; he tried to play one his songs 2 or 3 times but variously couldn't remember when to come in or even the words. So someone from the front row hands him their phone with the song cued up. :lollers2: he listens to it, laughs and says I'm starting it in the wrong octave. He plays it in the mic so everyone can hear it, puts the phone down and then starts the song again. Messed it up a couple more times, discusses it with the guitar player and the crowd and tries once more... and messed it up again. :spacepalm: Mercifully, he moved along but only after wasting at least 15 mins (which felt much longer to me). Not a bad show but certainly nothing I would have paid to go see.

Long story with family drama, but i did end up playing with my psychedelic band once while blacked out. Apparently I played the first song perfectly
Then I left to puke for the rest of the night
