Really like the Mosrite in the first clip, lovely breakup when you're on the bridge pickup - the little Dick Dale impression sounds good too. I think towards the end you switch to the neck pickup with loads of verb and it gets a bit flumpy on chords, but then that's bound to happen.

Ooo, the Les Paul on the bridge pickup in the normal channel is way more gainy than expect, bit fizzy/scratchy though. Not really unpleasant though - clean with the volume rolled back it sounds really nice indeed.

Wow, really like the Les Paul in the bass channel.

Bass sounds lovely - I don't think I've ever played through a proper nice loud bass amp. I've only ever played bass through little practice amps and DI boxes so proper loud bass always sounds good to me.

Strat - this sounds really good. I know you hate strats but this is a great tone, super clean, clear and bright but not thin and gutless.

How loud was this in the room? I've been up for getting a Fender head for a while but I'm conscious that it might only sound good when its been thrashed to a level that I'll never get it to.

Think it sounds best with the Mosrite and Strat. The Les Paul seemed to push the amp really hard and it became a bit scratchy which you don't get when you're playing into a Marshall.
Ha thanks, glad you're feeling better. That "paper-tearing" breakup is just what many Fenders do with humbuckers, particularly hot humbuckers. I've personally never heard one not do that. I hear it in youtube reviews and demos too. It's strange because you don't hear them like that in the room. It only really comes through on close miking and it can sound a little odd on it's own. I think it's because they let a lot of bass pass through the amp. Most Marshalls and other dirty amps are trimming out unwanted bass frequencies almost all of the time. Most Marshall gain stages and tone stacks are highlighting mids and upper mids and trying to not let bass eat up all of the bandwith. Fenders don't do that. Fenders are anti-mids. They're all bass and treble. Leo Fender disliked humbuckers, and he disliked distortion, and his guitars were all single coil guitars, so that's how Fender amps generally sound their best - clean and sparkly. I agree, I think the Strat sounded fantastic in these clips. Unfortunately that's a sound I almost never want to use. :lollers2:

I had the Assman wound up very loud for these clips. It was fully cranked for the really raunchy Les Paul clips. Treble and Bass settings stayed around 2:00 each, Presence around 12:00. I have a master volume on the amp but it was full-up for this. I only used the channel volumes and the guitar volume. It would be too loud for most gigs. But that's why I put the master volume on it.

I don't know what kind of Fender head would suit you without some type of master volume on it, and most of the more desirable Fender amp designs have no master volume. My 22w Deluxe Reverb head has no master volume and it's borderline loud enough for a full band practice. It has to give just about all it's got for how I play. I've only used it live four or five times and it seemed to be fine without irritating the sound guy. But here in the room by itself it's crazy loud. If you just want the Fender for cleans then they don't have to be deafening. If you want them to break up you gotta push them and then even a little Champ is pretty loud.
Paper Tearing breakup - that's it. I'm glad you know what I was talking about and its not something horrible in my ears.
I would mainly like a Fender for the clean sound, but, they do sound great when they're being thrashed too. I do like the Blues Jr. I could get that to breakup without destroying my house and its got a lovely clean. But its a combo... seems a bit pointless to buy one only to take it to a tech to saw the cabinet off it! There's also those little Fender Bassbreakers but they're more of a Marshall type sound.

You can see why I've ended up with the H&K... passable Fender(ish) tone, kind of Marshally depending on the settings, can do a Mesa(ish) hi gain. Not perfect on any of them but pretty nice on all of them.

If I could have snap together wires that didn't require soldering I would definitely do it.

That's pretty much how those Blues Jrs and Hot Rod Devilles are built.

and when gigged much they also essentially snap apart.

I got so tired of having to reheat fractured solder joints in my Hot Rod deVille I ended up yanking all the ribbon connectors where the pre and power sections connect and replaced them with 32 individual wires which was its own nightmare as the wires had to be positioned just right to not have bad noise.

But now I have one of the few 4x10 deVilles that can be gigged and not break down ..... but I have no use for it anymore so I'll prolly shove it in gregs truck when he comes around.

Dicking around this afternoon with the new Gretsch, trying to figure it out. It's so different from all my other shit.

Gretsch Tri-Five
Tender Assman normal channel
Marshall 4x12 - Vintage 30s - single SM57 just stuck somewhere near the grill.
A tiny little slapback with the Flashback Delay pedal, a little Boss Tremolo pedal, and a little spring reverb unit comes in later.
No EQ or FX in DAW.
Gretsched Assman .mp3

And this is a crude little test with a drum loop just to see...
Bass is also through the Assman
This is all done through the bass channel

That trem tone is tremendous - I've only used trem ITB - it doesn't give that tone.
It sounds like a pedal I could use.
BUT I'm saving pennies to get better monitors to replace my 4.5" ones.

those low output p'ups are something else to dial in huh?

My chickenbacker 12 has low output ..... but it does create a certain sound .... my 12 really has that Rick 12-string jangle and this Gretsch has it too so low output seems to do a jangle thing.

Nice mang!

Thanks fellas.
@rayc I'm using a Boss TR-2 for the Tremolo. Over here in the US those pedals are pretty common and inexpensive. One "trick" I like to do with Tremolo is, if possible, set the tremolo really harsh so the stutter is pretty aggressive, but then I put a lushy spring reverb after it so the reverb softens the edges. You get this really deep dimensional tremolo effect like that. I'm sure you could do something similar in the box.

@Lt. Bob I'm already abandoning these pickups!

After steady play at home and using the Gretsch at a band practice with my creepy dark psychosurfabilly rock project I've determined that these Filtertron Blacktops sound pretty nice, but they're kind of bland. They sound okay, but they lack the girth and sparkle that better tron type pickups have. The low end is sort of soft and undefined. The top end is clean but doesn't really "breathe" the way I'd like it to. I've got the bridge pickup and pole pieces damn near raping the low E string just to get some thump from it. They struggle to really push an amp in a pleasing-to-me sort of way. So I could live with these pickups, but they're coming out.

I've ordered a set of TV Jones Brian Setzers. They seem to have the characteristics I'm looking for.

What is a filtertron style pickup? Are they just a very low output humbucker? Or something different.

A man named Ray Butts invented a pickup that "filters" the hum. Filtertrons actually pre-dated Seth Lover's Gibson humbucker. Ray Butts and Seth Lover were like Tesla and Edison - two guys independently inventing pretty much the same thing at the same time. Seth Lover filed his patent paperwork first though so he is credited with the invention of the electric guitar humbucker. Historical blueprints and documentation show that Ray Butts and his filtertron were first though.

Anyway, a typical humbucker is two single coils jammed together to "buck" the hum. We all know the sound of a typical humbucker. Filtertrons are the same, although they're built differently so they sound way different. Humbuckers are flatter and wider, Filtertrons are taller and narrower. The poles are closer together on a Filtertron. They have a tighter, more focused sound. And they do generally have pretty low output but their large magnets give them a robust plucky sound even with their low output. To my ears they sort of sound like hum-free P-90s. They're very very good for clean and jangly tones, okay for mild rock crunch. They're not particularly great for higher gain stuff.

Okay and here's the Spite build 2204

This is pretty much how I use it. This is the sound. To each their own and all that, but for me this is pretty much perfection for my kind of idiotic punk rock and roll.

Les Paul Custom
2204 spite build
Marshall 4x12 - Celestion G12-65
57 dead center + Senn MD421 just outside dustcap
Both mics on axis, on grill - 50/50 blend
No EQ or FX

I looked into it...new they start at $199 + postage from a music store and above that on EBay.
End hand I could score one from Japan for $140.
I think I'll try you settings ITB to see how I go before spending.

Just getting around to listening to your Gretsch clips. Sounds different to what I was expecting, actually I don't know what I was expecting.
I guess I assumed it was gonna be more jangly, but its got a humbucker type sound, bit more indistinct - you know what I mean, how humbuckers just don't sound as clear as single coils (generally). Its cool though and you've obviously got it dialled in the sort of 50s style stuff you'll use it for.

Sounds brilliant in the mix, really suits your take on the song. This whole mix is cool.

What have you done to your drum sound? Its great.

I tell your 50W spite build is great! Probably my favourite pistols song too. Only thing with that clip is that it sounds a bit harsh/spikey! Probably fine in a mix and you know much better how to dial in a tone to fit in a mix than me. I think its just that you've got a 57 dead centre which is making it sound harsh to me - I changed to using an i5, after liking it on some of your clips.

These Gretsch and Filtertrons can be jangly, but that's not really their sound. They're thick but not flubby, clear but not as clean as a true single coil. To me this Gretsch as-is is pretty close to my kind of ideal Gretsch sound, but not quite there yet. With more experience and refinement I'll get there. These are the kinds of guitars for me where flipping between pickups is beneficial. I never use the neck pickup on my LPs and SGs. I could and should use it sometimes on a Gretsch.
What have you done to your drum sound? Its great.
Lol ugh that's just a basic stock done-nothing-to-it EZ Drummer loop.

It would be a little smoother with an i5 in the same position. That's pretty much my sound though. I left the amp set the way I was using it live. That's like my "live with the band tone" as opposed to my recording tone, though I'd probably be perfectly fine with that sound in a mix.

Man that's crazy. They're like 35-50 bucks used over here. I think I paid $45 for mine.

Someone in Australia needs to make your own home-grown gear that's good so yall can have nice things affordably. The prices you're forced to pay for basic American/British stuff is pretty crazy. Fucking oceans!
