Mo Meets the Tender Assman

Post by Greg_L »

Messing with tones with the new ASSMAN build...kinda just wrote and recorded this on the fly.

All guitars and bass are Mosrites and the Tender Assman.
Homebuilt Fender 6G15 Spring Reverb unit
Marshall 4x12 Vintage 30 cab
SM57 and Senn MD421 mics
Mo Meets the Tender Assman.mp3
Literally just finished, first and only mix so far. :happytrees:

The reverb is a little overwhelming. Do you have some more clean tones we can check out?

Lol it's supposed to be drowning in drippy reverb. I'll do some isolated cleans later.

Hell yeah, that sounds like an authentic surf sound to me! That reverb tank can really crank out the drip. And I can kind of recognize the ancestral sound compared to my Deluxe Reverb, mine is definitely a descendant of that sound but not as beefy. But there's something in common with the output section that I can hear, not sure how to describe it. And it even kind of sounds like the low input on my JCM800, another descendant of that sound.

Thanks dude. One thing I haven't done is really dig in and dissect how the Assman's 6G6B Bassman circuit compares to the legendary AB763 Fender circuit, which is what your Deluxe Reverb and most of the Blackface era amps is built on. The 6G6B bridges the Tweed era into the Blackface era so there may be some shared stuff in there. I should know since I've built both, but off the top of my head I'm not thinking of many similarities. The Bassmans are generally a different animal from the rest of Fender's lineup, but once you add a ton of spring reverb they do all end up sounding pretty similar. :sherlock: :lollers:

Like the tones. I like the reverb too. I hardly ever say that.

This is awesome Greg! I really like it. Just the right amount of reverb for me, any more would drown it and any less would kill that late 50s/early 60s vibe. Top stuff!

Ironically, I started working on something very similar myself today, a surfin'esque/Munsters Theme type instrumental. I'm not as far on as you though.

Well done :coolstorybro:

Thanks TripM. I'm either no reverb, or all of the reverb. No in between. :coolstorybro:

Sounds great, Greg. Kind of like authentic 50's surf music... but with something creepy thrown in.
I know you said its your first mix, but the main lead guitar arpeggio in the middle has some savagely piecing highs in it. Also, you bass playing isn't really popping out and its a cool bassline too.

Generally though, like always - its really good.

he 1st guitar part was a little on the icepick end partly becasue of the reverb I suspect. After than it was less so and the deep reverb until 1,44 when it was back...aggressive - could be the volume - yeah, I tried again with less level on the MP3 player and it wasn't anywhere near as ice pick.
GREAT sound and a very cool garage at the beach song.
Cheers

Thanks gents.

@JD01 @rayc Believe it or not I made it through that entire center guitar track in a single take flipping between the pickups. It took several tries, but I finally made it. That bright descending part in the middle was supposed to be on the neck pickup but I didn't flip the toggle all the way so I ended up with both pickups on and that's an out of phase sound, so it's really plucky and bright. The reverb just boosts the brightness. In my excitement of making it all the way through I just left it. It doesn't bother me. If this song ever sees the actual light of day I'll make some tweaks.

Very very cool @Greg_L Everything sounds the way it should. Also love that crazy bangy crashy bit. That shit is cool as hell. the DIY boner is strongk on this one. Home made Amp, home made reverb on a original song recorded at home. Pretty much all in on the DIY here. this is a mantle piece song if ever there was one.

I got no nits on the mix or anything at all. Just fine the way it is. I might have to scoop this and add it to my surf playlist on spotify now that figured out how to add my local files into it!!!

good jorb!

Sounds great. Where do I sign up to buy a kit for a 6G6B-Bassman-circuit-based amp? lol
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎
