The Tone Thread
Re: The Tone Thread
Lol. Excellent. I'm getting a fucking ruler out and measuring shit and you get a dog to do you mic placement

Their simpler amp sounds cool though.

Re: The Tone Thread
Miner, I think that tone sounds good. But I tend to think that most tones sound good, I'm not super picky about anybody's tone but mine
It is a little mid-challenged I guess, but it sounds clean and I can hear that power section working its tail off.

Re: The Tone Thread
Oops...double double post post.
Re: The Tone Thread
OK, been fannying about with my mic placement and EQ etc. Riffs are an amalgamation of typical JD riffs.
Crunch Channel
Master 12 O clock
Gain 12 O clock
Treble 1O clock
Mid 1:30
Bass 12 O clock
1W version 5W version (I also tried a 20W but its basically way way too loud for this room)
I actually think 1W sounds a touch better. Still needs a little something, but I'm not sure what yet.

Re: The Tone Thread
I'm gently tweaking them in Reaper with ReaEQ to see if I can find where to look next - a tiny cut at 400 maybe.
OK, I've done a bit more fiddling, and the difference between this and the other 1W version is pretty subtle - I think its an improvement though.

Re: The Tone Thread
Hey, James. I think the last 1W tone is the best of the lot. I really don't like the others at all, I'm afraid. They have a kind of dull, "old string" sound, to me. Can you do away with one of the mics and use the other mid-cone between the edge and the cap? I know you have your system, but will you indulge me?

Yeah. Listening back now I'm not that happy either. I actually think it's not enough gain. More experiments tomorrow. Loving the amp though, sounds great in the room so the problem is clearly down to me!Bubba wrote: ↑Sat Mar 24, 2018 1:12 pm Hey, James. I think the last 1W tone is the best of the lot. Re: The Tone Thread
Morning Gents, I'm only posting up 20s clips 'cos you've heard enough of my shit over the last couple of days.
Spent a good hour fucking about with knobs on 0W from quite early this morning and I think I have something I'm pretty happy with - definitely better than anything I ever got out of the Blackstar!
Can you tell me what you think of this and how I can improve it, my only concern with it is that it sounds a bit "dull" there's no sparkle in the highs, but if I just add more treble I tend to get a "boxy" mid effect that I don't like. Actually having this mic'd out loud will probably help with this.

Re: The Tone Thread
Works fine in a mix James. The palmed bits lack the thunk and seem to have more boom in the solo'd version.

Re: The Tone Thread
I was actually a little bit carful with an EQ on this. The RedBox cab emulation I am using seems to have a boom at 125hz, so I stuck a little scoop in there and seemed to improve it. Also I was just trying to get a bit of top end back in that I was losing and I ended up going for a low pass with a bump. Seemed to make an improvement again, check this out.
Re: The Tone Thread
There's a scratchiness in the cab emulation that doesn't agree with me. It's not terrible, but it grates on my ears. I prefer your mic'd tracks.

Re: The Tone Thread
Sounds pretty good. Remember, it's the tone YOU want that matters. I think that's definitely a good sound for the stuff you do. It would be a bit dark for me.

Re: The Tone Thread
Yeah, I get the scratchiness, which I'm not sure if I can dial out. I think it's more likely that emulation is more likely to pick up my right palm scratching the strings as I mute.
Still, one of my better tones regardless!

Re: The Tone Thread
Lol. I really doubt that's what it is. I think it's just something in the emulation software/algorithm/circuit.

Re: The Tone Thread
It's not like it's a tone-killer or anything. I just notice it compared to the mic'd clips.

Re: The Tone Thread
I had a quick listen to all of 'em Jdude, & the clip I liked the best was "Generic JD Rhy Tone"...That clip just sounds more "alive" to me...Whatever it is you're doing is working...It'll take you a while to learn the new amp, but you're off to a blazing start dude...
You've got me interested in the H&K amps again...I was thinking really hard on getting a Marshall Origin, but I'm not sure now...Your new amp has a lot of features that would be pretty useful for me, & I think it sounds really good too...

Re: The Tone Thread
You’d love it miner. The sandman done I did was about half the gain on the lead channel, so there’s a bit more where that came from, but nearly all of the dial should be useable.Minerman wrote: ↑Sun Mar 25, 2018 6:08 pm I had a quick listen to all of 'em Jdude, & the clip I liked the best was "Generic JD Rhy Tone"...That clip just sounds more "alive" to me...Whatever it is you're doing is working...It'll take you a while to learn the new amp, but you're off to a blazing start dude...

The cleans on this amp are amazing.
