This is the second time I've ever stuck mics on it....the very first time went straight to tape for a song I'm just finishing. For real. How's that for a trial by fire? The first time I ever mic'd it, bam, keeper track. Anyway, here's my new-to-me Celestion G12H30s.

I went full 70s tribute on this piece of crap. Meaning, I hacked my way through a few bad 70s songs with good riffs.

1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom - Bare Knuckles Riff Raff bridge p/u
1979 Marshall JMP 2204
Presence - 4
Bass - 6
Mid - 7
Treb - 4
Preamp gain - 7
Master vol - 5
Marshall 1960B 4x12 - Celestion G12H30
Shure SM57 on axis, on grill, dead center dustcap - SM57 ~30 deg off axis, on grill, right next to the other one
50/50 mic blend
No FX or EQ in DAW
Good tone dude, but I didn't expect anything less from you...I find the mic positions interesting, on their own the centered '57 would be shrill as hell, but combined with another mic, they cancel out the frequencies that most of us try to avoid...

I like my G12H, but it was the "grow on me with time" thing...Before it was broken in I was pretty disappointed, especially since I paid $150 for it...After being broken in I think it's great & I like it a lot more than my V30...

In other news, I'm considering another ISO cab build...I'd hoped to be in another house this summer, but it looks like I'm gonna have to wait...I have some different ideas I've been thinking about, & I'm positive I can build another one that'd sound as good/better, be smaller, while being even quieter...

Thanks dude. Yes, that's true. Each mic on it's own sounds like ass. But combined they sound great.

I remember that. I remember telling you to give it time and that you gotta break that bitch in. And every tone you posted with it got better and better and better as it broke in. I remember your shootouts and I remember your G12H30 sounding the best to me. That's pretty much what made me decide to try some. I don't think mine's fully broken in yet, but it's close.

Dude check out the Mojotone iso cabs. They look pretty cool.

I do ok using 2 mics, but I need to practice up on that to learn some more...To be honest, I haven't really played much guitar since I went on the e-kit journey, but I'm gonna get back into it...

It's cool you finally bought something I've got that you like, most of my guitar oriented gear I've bought is because you get great results from 'em...
After it's broken in it's like a day/night difference & that speaker is a totally different animal than anything else I have IMO...
Greg_L wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2017 9:12 pmDude check out the Mojotone iso cabs. They look pretty cool.
I'm curious how those particular ISO cabs sound, but they're way too expensive for me to buy without knowing for certain it does what it's supposed to & sound good recorded while doing it...While it would be cool to buy one & do the plug-n-play thing, but I could build 3-4 of 'em for that price...I got bit when I bought that shitty Randall ISO cab, & I'm a bit wary of any that are prefabbed/mass produced...

The cab I built was a learn as I go thing, & I learned a lot from it...

Some of the ideas I have are:

De-couple the inner box from the outer...I'm thinking of using resilient channels, u-boat floor floaters (basically a U shaped piece of rubber a floor joist fits into that would de-couple the inner box from the outer) and/or other things that are used to soundproof a room...

Using plywood, mineral fiber insulation, & mass loaded vinyl sandwiched together with green glue between the layers...

Leave an air gap between the outer box's sandwich & the inner box...

I'm still debating how big of an air gap I could use because I need the outer dimension to be as small as possible, while having the inner box's inside as big as possible...

Dunno if I'm gonna build another one or not, but if I do, I'm not gonna rush anything...

They do look cool dude, but I'm not sure I could pull something like that off...I was thinking more along the lines of the Randall/Jet City/Rivera iso cabs, only bigger, about 28" wide x 28" deep/tall x 30" long...

On the size, I have to keep it 28" or under on the width, or I won't be able to get it out of my room/house...

Great Tones, Greg - whatever you've got going on there seems to react to the volume really well. Sounds particularly good for the verse part COMWS.

Been light on tones recently - I've really not done much recording the last few weeks - the last time I did anything significant was when I installed the Mutt-pup and then the weekend or two after when I did some more tracking (not posted it yet though)

Thanks man. I'm liking these speakers. And they sound awesome combined with the V30s in the same cab.

Yeah, must be great to have a choice of cabs and the space to use them. Don't think I'll ever own a 4x12. Haven't given up on a nice 2x12 though.

It's certainly a nice luxury to have, but they do take up a ton of space. :spacepalm:

I'd love to go back to the full stack I used to have a number of years ago. Proper rock star rig. :D Not really sensible, though!

No, not sensible, but yes awesome.

I like bringing a full stack to gigs just for the absurdity of it. And when I know the other bands on the bill are combo amp bands, the full stack almost always makes an appearance. :coolstorybro:

Johan playing guitar through a Superbass MkII set up as per Lemmy. I can't get mine to sound that good.
Mind you there's not a LOT of break up in this set up either.

Move that air, baby! :)

I like how he says "gi-tu-a-rrr" with that Swedish accent (I assume he's a Swede)... :D
...and I like the Swedes. ;)

That 415 must be a real nutcracker to haul around...it's a must-have-rodies kind of cab.

New Guitar possibly new tone...
Here's a demo of my new Fender Squire Bullet Mustang HH. HH for 2 humbuckers I presume. Tone pot set with no high end cut at all.
Straight into my little 5 watt Kustom Defender H amp into Marshall cheapie 4 x 12 then 57 mic centred and about 20cm from grill, into Reaper nothing done except chopped the quiet bits out.
I play the same progression of power chords, on the bottom E, A and D strings, throughout using 1st the Bridge then both then neck pickups. The 1st run through was with the guitar volume at about 40% then cranked after which I increased the amp volume each time I'd been through the three pick ups.

Damn that little amp gets wild!

I like the initial rolled back sounds the best. Then the amp took over and it got pretty hairy. I think that amp's character will override any guitar you plug into it.

Yeah, I agree Greg. I wanted to see how hairy though. The initial amp setting was at 2 (from 10) and I thought the guitar vol cranked into that was a) pretty loud and b) pretty good.
The amp gets into oscillations pretty quickly as well which spoils the feedback fun after a bit.
There're no tone controls on the amp - just one volume knob.
Do you think an EQ pedal in front could tame some of the silliness?

I don't know, maybe. It seems to go into break up super fast, and there's a lot in the low end. An EQ in front might help it out. Doesn't hurt to try it.

Thanks Greg,
It's clear the 1st clip is more an demo of the amp than the guitar.
This clip has more guitar.
The amp volume is set at 2 out of 10.
The pick up sequence is bridge, both then neck.
The quieter sections are the guitar vol at about 7 and the louder at 10.
I strummed then picked open chords and later played F shaped chords or variations thereof.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/q6sdz5srayyne ... 2.mp3?dl=0
Oh, the mic is about 6cm from the cone not 20.
Yep there's a tuning problem - downstairs is really cold at the moment and my hand clamped a bit too much over the medium jumbo frets as well as having a dud tuner at present.
