Re: The Tone Thread
Sorry, you're right. I mis-spoke (AKA I lied). I meant there is a lot of variation in the sound, but it's just G-12M's.

Re: The Tone Thread
So I have a chance to get a '73 Les Paul Custom (the pickguard is also autographed by Les) from a friend that is moving to Florida. I get to try it out tomorrow. Here's what she looks like:
He's asking $3k for it which, assuming it's in good condition and original, seems like a good price. What do y'all think?

Is there proof that it is actually Les Paul's signature? That guitar is worth $3k without being autographed. With an actual Les signature it could be worth way way more.

Other than I know the guy and he has no reason to say it if it's not true, no. I'll be taking the pick guard off anyway (I know, sacrilege to some of you) and as you mention the thing is worth that regardless. I love the color, too.Greg_L wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2017 4:04 pmFuck yeah that's awesome.Bill L wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2017 3:50 pm So I have a chance to get a '73 Les Paul Custom (the pickguard is also autographed by Les) from a friend that is moving to Florida. I can't wait to try this out tomorrow.

I live in Florida .... tell him to just bring it to me!

Looks nice. Those early 70's models are some of the nicest to play. Sounds like a solid deal if you like how it fits you. Ignore the pickguard thing thats just a bonus and without provenance it will not add to value or your enjoyment of it...Bill L wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2017 3:50 pm So I have a chance to get a '73 Les Paul Custom (the pickguard is also autographed by Les) from a friend that is moving to Florida. Re: The Tone Thread
I hate to admit this outloud but im an antiques nerd.
the LP sig might not fetch any extra value with out provenance or verification of authenticity by a 'professional'
Theortically without that verification 'to a collector' it may as well have a been a child writing the a swear word across the pickguard.
Sweet rig though. I hope your test drive goes well. Its a sexy beast regardless of the signature.

I have a friend that is an autograph junkie. He always tells me about things he has that are signed. I'm like, woopdy fucking doo. He'll stand in a long line to get The Cult bass player's autograph at a signing table. I just don't get it. I don't understand this fascination people have with autographs.

Re: The Tone Thread
I'll never get that. Autographs, or even meeting a "star". I have not drop of "hero worship" blood in me. These people take a shit that smells every day just like you and me. I respect their talent, but I couldn't give a fuck about them as humans.Greg_L wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2017 9:15 pm I have a friend that is an autograph junkie. We were doing a gig once at the Molson centre, which is Montreal's main event place, like MSG or the L.A. Forum. We actually were playing in between periods at a hockey game with Montreal against Tampa Bay. Our guitar player, who's a grown 50 year old man, was like "if we stand here we might see Stamkos". I'm like "Dude, you're a grown fucking man. Are you for real?" What the fuck. Basically, I'm not excited about meeting someone who isn't just as excited to meet me.

I'll take the opportunity to tell somebody how much I enjoy their work, maybe shake their hand, but to hang out with them? Try to ingratiate myself with them and be their friend? Nah. I'm with Rammer. Hanging with somebody you've idolised via their work has no appeal to me at all. You're not meeting on an equal footing as human beings so how can that be pleasurable?

Re: The Tone Thread
I've only fan-boyed over Social Distortion. It was embarrassing but i felt compelled to do it for my inner child. I spent 30 years of my life in an area of the world where bands never came. I never thought id ever see Social D. then I moved out here and see them every few years. First time i think i was 31? I owed it to myself to at least shake the guys hand who influenced me to pick up a guitar and learn to play it and give me a something to be passionate about. Same for johnny two bags. Every band i had have ever been in except one covered the vandals song about him, so that was cool to be like, "oh hey, your johnny two bags, do you still have the blues?"
Really tho i had nothing to say to Mike Ness other than lolling at him saying how cold it was. I was in a t shirt and he was in a coat and scarf. I just wanted my old poster signed and then gtfo of there.
My wife on the other hand is that girl at shows that needs autographs of from band, roadies, and lighting guys. I will never understand why to this day but its a thing for her.
More forum appropriate, we typically host a big Christmas Eve shindig at my place and the last few years we play Greg's Christmas songs and she tells everyone "Oh i know this guy we had BBQ together in texas"
Fuck sakes.

Whelp, I did it; pulled the trigger. 1973 Custom with what appears to be the original case.
It's a player. The original owner changed the tuners, may have had some neck work (but looking further it appears to be wear from hanging in a stand/hanger). All the pots look like original soldering. This thing is HEAVY. I'll weigh it when I get a chance. Great condition for a 44 year old guitar. Plugged it in and it sounds great. Can't wait to put nice strings on it and set it up. I already put the pick guard aside; I'll see if the sig looks real but who cares? Either way I just bought a killer ax.
