Yes but it could be funny. I doubt EVH liked his sound being called "brown" for all those years. :lollers2:

I wonder how that even came to be. I'm gonna have to look that up. I generally dislike the usual sound descriptors, like creamy or woody, but they've become used so much you just know what it is.

I can see how "Brown" came up. I get visions of a thick, syropy, slop of sound. If you like it, it's great. If you don't, it's shit.

Yours could be "brown note". One listen and you uncontrollably shit yourself. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.

Well it appears that the "brown sound" term is indeed an EVH invention. Of course he lies constantly, but many stories reference EVH's love for his brother's snare drum sound, which he describes as sounding brown, like he's beating a log. He wanted his guitar sound to match that snare sound. Lol. WTF. So once again, a drummer is responsible for everything. :D

That makes sense. I hear that woody sound in Alex's snare. I have a love/hate relationship with his drum sound. I don't really like the sound, but I have to give it to him for how distinctive it is. You know a Van Halen tune from the first hit of that snare on any tune, maybe even more than Eddie's guitar.

I think his snare has that 70s "black dot" head sound to it. It's like every 70s snare to me. It's not a sound I particularly like for myself, but it's that sound.

I find it a little more distinctive than most typical 70's snares. It has a "boink" that I recognize right away.

I downloaded that clip last night Rami, but fell asleep before I replied...It does sound pretty good man, you're getting pretty damn consistent with your tones...

The snare sound Alex VH gets is one of my favorites, you can immediately tell who it is...Of course, Ed's guitar tone is one of my favorites too, but I actually did get pretty close to that with the Ceriatone amp I had...I tried a bunch of times to get close to that snare sound, but never even got close...

I think your pick attack is what makes your sound unique, but could be wrong...Since you've been killing it with a small amp, I'd love to hear what you could do with a 50/100 watter & 4x12 dude...

Thanx Miner.

Actually that clip was all sim and impulse. I got a trial of Amplitube 3, disabled the cab, and used Greg's cab impulses. I think it sounds pretty good. At least, no worse than my amp.

I went through all the Amplitube amps and the only ones I liked were their Marshalls, and maybe one of the Mesa Boogies.

For Marshalls, they have:

British Lead S100...which is.....Marshall® 1959 JTM100™ Super Lead (Hardly any gain)

British Tube Lead 1....which is....Marshall® JCM800™ (Pretty nice with good gain for rythm guitar)

British Tube Lead 2....which is....Marshall® JCM900™ (More gain but too fizzy/scooped for my tastes)

Vintage Metal Lead....which is....Marshall® JMP100™ head (My favorite and the one I used for all the guitars in the clip I posted).

So I used the "Marshall JMP100 head" for all the guitars and just used different cabs for the rythms and lead.

not gonna lie, if you wait for Amplitube to do one of there sales where they throw in a suite of amps it is well worth it rammer i did it a while back. And while i haven't really pumped out a full song yet, the little bit i have played with it it is pretty cool. If anything i will likely only use Amplitube as thickener tracks for guitar doubling. That was my plan. maybe a few leads and solos? Who knows, regardless it is good to have in your tool belt if you decide to drop money on it. But definitely wait for a power sale where you get way more bang for you buck. I got Ampltiube 4 plus the Orange Suite both for 129CAD i think? pretty good deal based on the cost of each component alone.

You can also trial an amp sim for i think up to three days to see if you like it. I think that's kind of neat. I have demo'd a bunch and most of them are not my cup of tea, but i did do the try before you buy thing.

Cool beans Rami...
Those Marshall sims are Amplitube's older versions dude, the new Marshall sims they have blow those completely out of the water dude, seriously...

I think if you buy the basic Amplitube 4 with the new Marshall sims, you get those older sims with it...You might have to check their website to be absolutely sure though...

I got AT4 as a Christmas present in 2015, & I think it's a lot better than AT3, in particular the Marshall amps...You'll also have the ability to change speakers in the cabs too...There are like 3-4 versions of the V30 speaker, Greenback, G12H, etc...To me, the new cabs are a step up from AT3, & again, the new Marshall sims are pretty close dude...

There's a Slash & Jimi Hendrix pack too, both of which have Marshall amps/cabs...

And like Shan mentioned, if you wait & catch it on sale, you can probably get it for a decent price...

Thanx Miner. Aplitube 3 has Slash and I hated it. I'm not worried about the cabs and speakers because I have Greg's speaker impulses that I can mix and match. I'm going to play with 3 for a while and then decide from there.

The difference in Amplitube 3 and 4 is night and day. They made incredible strides forward in the sim world between the two versions.

in saying that i feel pretty strongly most of what you pay for is the user experience. After playing with the hybrit and gregs IR's you can acheive the same thing for free. Amplitube is about as versatile as it can be a time waster screwing around with stuff lol.

I will take a look at 4 for sure. I still have to decide if I'm goint to go that way first. If I do, I'm sure I'll buy 4. If I'm going to do something, I'll get the best version of it that I can.

Those screen shots of the heads that Miner posted look intersting.

it is a pretty fun sim to use. it is essentially as thorough maybe a bit more as the IR's greg provided in terms of mic placements. however, in other aspects the trade off is thus:

where amplitube provides way more speaker selections than gregs, gregs make up for it with mic selections. I think stock Amplitube 4 comes with maybe 4 mics and a stereo mic configuration which does nothing but make a mess of tone so i always leave that off. Always. It brings nothing to table unless you are doing one lonely guitar track and need "air" and "space". But you can configure a 4x12 cab with 4 different speakers, and even if you only mic that 4x12 with one mic haveing the four different speakers will change the tone. Albeit subtly but it changes.

I would think if you got crafty enough you could create the same affect with the IR though.

I'm sure a combination of Amplitube's amps with Greg's cabs (which have a multitude of speakers mic positions, etc...) is more than I'd ever need.
