The Tone Thread
Re: The Tone Thread
Wow Jdude, those cab IR's make a huge difference in your guitar tones man...I'd be tempted to go direct if I were in your shoes, I'm still tempted to do it here myself, but I know I'll eventually get the fuck outta here & be able to raise hell again...
I've mentioned this before, so I'll mention it again, I've got a shit-load of impulses here, all you'd have to do is ask & I'd let you guys have your pick of 'em...Just sayin'....

Re: The Tone Thread
yea, Jdude. Your guitars sound much more alive. They have much more of a third dimension as a sim then they do as a mic'd tone. That is really fucking bizarre.
Which sort of begs the question what is eating your real tone? Something in the signal chain? Shitty mic? Faulty Mic? That little cab? A faulty little cab?
The room? Bunged cables? Possibly having a stereo cable where a mono cable should be? To me your everyday guitar tones always just seem to have this thin flat sound. And that can't all be choked up to to your amp just being a Blackstar combo. You have worked decidedly hard at trying to get what you got now.
I am betting there is more to the thin JDtone than just the blackstar combo blues. I mean there has to be right??? There is no reason why your amp can sound like that behind an impulse file and noticeably different when mic'd. I can't say i am computing why the difference. i'm not a tone sorcerer myself but i can't help but wonder what is causing the difference.

Weird init?
Obviously the impulse isn't the same speaker as I actually have. I'll have to get the rest of the speaker impulses off Greg, so I can compare a V30 impulse with my real V30.
Its just miked up with an SM57 - generally resitant to damage an reliable straight into my AI. I place the mic on the edge of the dustcap - just like the impulse I chose.
I don't these tones sound that different, Shan, although you're probably not as used to my most recent tones that have been getting a lot better as Greg and Minerman are. It probably is mainly the small combo cab as Liv_Rong always got better tones out of his Blackstar than I do and he has an Orange cab.
So, Greg/Miner - I would like a few more impulses if I can have them, the only ones I have are the 1960A G12m although I do have all of the mics and placements. I'd just like the ones for the main speakers that we'd commonly use, Greenback, Creamback, V30 etc so I can have a bit of a mess about finding the best one.
What difference does the bitrate of the sample make?

Re: The Tone Thread
It's not that weird at all to me. JD, I've thought all along that any of your tone issues can be traced back to three potential things - 1) that stupidly hot JB pickup, 2) that murky dull Blackstar amp, or 3) the tiny box that is the cab of that murky dull Blackstar amp. Each of those issues on it's own is no big deal, but combine them all and it can be a problem. IMO two changes you've made recently that address some of these points have made huge improvements. One of those being switching to the P90 PRS. That pickup in that guitar improved your general sound IMO. No more JB? Better sound. And now taking the cab out of the picture with a good speaker/cab impulse also made an improvement IMO. I'm not going to blame the Vintage 30 because they're good speakers. It has to be, in my mind, that JB pickup's interaction with that amp, and the tiny box the poor speaker has to live in.
It's not mics or preamps or rooms or any of that. It's a source sound problem. But none of this matters if you like what you're getting. You're the one that has to like it, not any of us.

Re: The Tone Thread
Yeah, the best tones I've got have been the split coil bridge on my custom twinned the the PRS. Looking forward to getting the Mutt-Bucker and seeing what changes that makes.
I'd like do a like for like comparison with the V30 impulse against the actual V30. The biggest benefit this will have for me though is being able to track basic rhythms early in the morning and late at night without pissing my neighbours off, the main drawback is that it sounds like shit in your headphones... and there's no feedback of course.

Re: The Tone Thread
I think I have some Mesa cab V30 impulses somewhere. I'll have to look. I've literally never used them so I don't know how good they are.JD01 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 17, 2017 1:29 pm Yeah, the best tones I've got have been the split coil bridge on my custom twinned the the PRS. Greg, these Mesa ones are really good
Re: The Tone Thread
Not bad. I've never tried them. Try some other files and see what's up.

Here's Miner's oversize Mesa impulse
Re: The Tone Thread
Yeah, I'm just browsing through them and seeing what I can find - I won't bore you with everything interesting I come across, results are pretty decent so far though.
Re: The Tone Thread
Yeah, I'm fairly pleased with this little discovery this morning. I'd always thought impulses sounded shit but I just wasn't using them properly.
Re: The Tone Thread
Lol you got a lot to learn still grasshoppa!
You could monitor via the emulated out on your amp. It'll sound better than the direct feed and you can still track silently.

Re: The Tone Thread
Lol....newbie tone chaser dude...
I gotta say I like the clip with my impulse, it seems a little fatter to me, neither are bad though...
When you really get into the swing of trying new things, load up a vst pedal board in your daw, send the di signal to your amp with a re-amp box or stompbox, then back into the daw with your impulse/cab on the tail end...There are all kinds of ways to do this stuff Jdude, the only limits are your imagination & gear...
I saw you've mentioned not being able to have feedback while tracking direct too...It's possible dude, while not totally silent you can run your guitar into your interface recording the di, send the di to a re-amp box then to your amp...Turn the gain as high as it'll go & adjust the amp's volume to be as quiet as possible but still getting feedback...When you record the di, the feedback will be printed into the di, then you can re-amp later with less gain/more volume...While I've not tried this myself, I have saw guys use headphones or their monitors close to their guitar's p'up making ampsims feedback too...
I do know the re-amp feedback thing works though dude, trust me...
Lots of ways to get where you wanna go dude, like I mentioned, the only limit really is your imagination...

And while Jdod's on his impulse journey, I'm making some home-made diy cowbell & tambourine triggers over here....
