The Tone Thread
Re: The Tone Thread
Yeah, what are we supposed to be looking for there? Those price tags defy gravity. Fucking Holland must be in a vacuum.

Ah, I see it now. Well, I wouldn't blame them for either of those reaons.

Re: The Tone Thread
OK, here's something I'm working on. How does that weird 7th chord that starts the tune and goes all the way through sound? It's not really supposed to sound "good" as much as it should sound sort of weird in a cool way, I hope.
Also, a couple of solos in this one. One at about 1:49 and one at about 3:09. Tones ok?
This is a quick faders up semi-mix. So, I'm not worried about details on the levels just yet.

Re: The Tone Thread
I love the whole thing. I've been playing slide to it since I downloaded it. Great tune that I'm stealing for live shows with or without your permission

Re: The Tone Thread
You talking about my tune? Seriously? If you are, take it man. Do what you want with it. I'm flattered.
The weird thing about it is that the E7 that goes all through the verses is a major chord, there's a G# in it (Emajor 7). But when I solo, I'm soloing in Em. Does that happen often? The chord has a G# in it, but I'm playing a G. You know what I mean?

Here's me just noodling around. Open G tuning, Strat (with Lindy Fralin Blues Special pups), flat wound strings through a Vox Tonelab SE. When I get a chance I'm gonna crank the Bassman and see what happens. Maybe later this week. I play 7's in so much stuff that the whole thing just sounds natural to me. Especially for what the song is. I love it.

Re: The Tone Thread
I like that blue LP looking one in the middle. I like it a lot. i'd like it even more if it had cream colored P90's. That'd be a bucketlist guit for me.
Re: The Tone Thread
Ran across some Andrew Scheps interview clips about various recording things...here's one about his approach to guitar and bass.

Re: The Tone Thread
Man, that's too awesome. So THAT'S what slide playing is supposed to sound like. Are you playing in a minor scale? I found myself playing regular pentatonic (because that's literally all I know) on the 12th fret (E) for this, as if it was in E minor. Love your playing Bill. It's so cool to hear my tracks with a good player playing over them.Bill L wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2017 4:16 pm Here's me just noodling around. Re: The Tone Thread
Pretty much a minor pentatonic as well for me. Because of the slide, though, it sounds different because my passing tones can vary. No capo, most of the solo played around the 9th fret (which is where you'll find the E barre chord in open G tuning). I'm looking forward to really giving it a good run. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday when the wife is out of the house. Plus it'll give me some time to build a meaningful solo.rammer24 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2017 4:24 pm

And thank you for the kind words. I'm humbled.
Re: The Tone Thread
If you want, I can send you a version with my solos muted, so that you can solo where the solos were intended to be.
Funny how the minor pentatonic works even though that constant chord is a major7. Well, it's funny to me because I still don't totally understand these things. Maybe it makes sense to those of you that have a better grasp of keys and scales than I do...which is pretty much everyone.

Re: The Tone Thread
Would it be possible for this guy to over pronounce his words any more?
I watched some of it, but when a guy goes into "I don't know what I'm doing. I just stick a mic in front of the amp" type of stuff, as much as I like that approach, I don't see the point of interviewing him at that point.

I'm not sure why stuff works and doesn't work yet either.rammer24 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2017 4:37 pm If you want, I can send you a version with my solos muted, so that you can solo where the solos were intended to be.

I do a bunch of tunes with *7 chords and I almost always solo in a minor pentatonic.
I really want to spend some time with the CAGED method. My buddy learned it and now his solos are off the hook. Makes me feel like a chump when I hear just how effortlessly he plays regardless of chord progression.
Re: The Tone Thread
And unless you want me to solo on the tune for you, no worries. I'm just gonna send the song to the bass player and the drummer as it is. If there's 2 guitar players, I'll play open g slide; If it's just me, I'll probably play regular tuning and slide.
Re: The Tone Thread
Cool Bill. Let me know if you want any other version of it. With solos, without solos, with vocals, which are actually recorded but I muted them to post this in the tone thread. Whatever you need.

Re: The Tone Thread
Send me the tune as it's supposed to be. I can't guarantee I won't tinker with it
but if it's already a complete song we'll start there and see what happens.
Re: The Tone Thread
No problem, do whatever you want to it. I'll upload it later today. You'll probably want a version without my solos if I un-mute the vocals, or else you won't have any place to solo. I'll send it to you as is, and then you can tell me if you want me to change anything.

Excellent, thanks!

Re: The Tone Thread
I think he's just being humble...and not wanting to get into some surgical technique discussion. It's the little comments in between that reveal his approach to recording and mixing. Not sure if it's in this clip or the one I posted in the Drum forum with him...but like when he says it's really about what's coming out of the speakers and not what you see on the screen....nothing really "OMG!" about that comment, but a lot of people do get lost in their computer screens and forget to just listen.
Anyway, I like listening to him more than some guys who right away try to present some techno-mumbo-jumbo answers...being too specific about what they did on some mix...because it's really not relevant, unless you're doing everything else the same way they did.
Like when he says he just duct tapes two mics and puts them right at the center of the cone...done...and not all that "I place it a 1/4" off the edge, with a 45 degree angle, at exactly 2.5" off the grille"...etc....and then every newb is out there trying to replicate that setup.
