I don't know if that's "the best tone I ever made" or anything (it isn't lol) but it does show what I'm always talking about with juggling a bright and dark mic placement.

It takes more setup time and the phase relationship has to be dead on via physical placement, or micro-sliding in the DAW, but it works well. To me, when combined, it's like using one mic that can capture the entire speaker up close. You get all of the sound a speaker can make summed into one track.
I think we're just posting across the whole forum here, so we're not just holed up in The Tone Thread like we were on HR.com.

Best Tone - translates as "The one I like best"

I've started using two mics and blending lately - For a slightly different reason to you, but it does really make a difference.

I got a new pedal yesterday. I gave my buddy the couch that was in my man-studio, he gave me a Fulltone Fat Boost. I don't know anything about it really. It's just an overdrive pedal. It's got some unique features though. For one, it's like 35db of clean boost - that's a shit ton. Also, the "drive" knob has detents. It's not a smooth pot. It clicks, clicks, clicks around the dial. Supposedly it's some self-biasing FET feature? I don't fucking know.

If its anything like the OCD, which it probably is, the amount of boost available with the level control will really surprise you at first!

I've used the OCD before. Don't really like it. It's just too much of everything. Hopefully this thing is not like the OCD.

I just meant the level control really - I'm sure its gain structuring is different. I don't know what the maximum level is on the OCD - buts its very loud!

I think the OCD is best used in front of a clean amp...or clean-ish. It's like an amp-in-a-box. I don't ever operate like that. If this "fat boost" operates as it's name suggests, then it'll probably be fine. I guess I'll find out today!

Yeah, like JD says, I think people are all over the place, rather than just sitting in one forum. The tones I posted the other day were downloaded twice, and one of those was me. So, other than you, nobody even listened. I have to use the "New Posts" feature more often because I know I'm missing a lot of new posts.

I guess that's good and bad.

I used "new posts" this morning after my weekend internet hiatus, and there was a lot to go through. I still haven't caught up yet.

I know for me it is what Jdude said, there's a whole forum to go through, & it's hard to keep up (for me anyway) sometimes because I'm not just in one thread all the time...

I'll get caught up on the tones here in a little while, I've spent the last few days messing with the new e-kit, & I'm finally getting it set up how I want...

Here's some crapabilly with the Fat Boost. I wanted to see how it drives a slightly breaking up amp, so out comes the Mosrite clone and the JMP...

Hallmark 60 Custom - "Fat Pig" one-of-a-kind custom for Greg single coil bridge pickup
Fulltone Fat Boost-3 OD
Marshall JMP 2204
Presence - 6
Bass - 3
Mid - 5
Treb - 6
Preamp vol - 5
Master vol - 6
Marshall 1960A4x12 - Celestion G12-65
Shure SM57 on axis, on grill, dustcap/cone seam
No EQ or FX in DAW

Fat Pig Fat Boost

So the way this works is...first section is straight guitar/amp. Second section is Fat Boost set for pure clean boost, max level, 0 drive added. Third section is level 2:00, drive 1:00 for more hair.

I just prefer the straight into the amp tone at the beginning. The pedal does add more low end but it adds a dull compression as well.

I had the bass and treble both full up on the pedal. According to the manual for this thing, they're strictly subtractive, so having them all the way up doesn't affect the signal at all. The bass is supposed to be rolled back as the gain in the pedal goes up, but I didn't do that. That's too much fiddlin around. Next I'm gonna see what it does with a wilder raw amp sound and humbuckers.

I think I preferred the tones without the pedal there, but I didn't like the straight tone much and I normally like the Fat Pig too. Probably 'cos you were playing something so different to what you normally play.

How are you finding it?

I like it okay, but I haven't actually used it Greg-style yet.

I expect it will be like the rest of my OD pedals - rarely used because raw amp sound is better.

I used to a be a rockabillying hepcat daddy-o!

That was a long time ago.

I looked up some vids to see how other people are using this thing. They use it to push and dirty up a clean amp or a mild crunch. I don't even know how to get the best out of it like that.

Whatever the case, I'm sure I'm not doing it justice. I really don't much get along with any pedals. But I do like what it did in my clips so far. I don't mind it. I won't use it like that, but I didn't think it sounded bad. The problem for me with pedals is that I'm already using amps that just kick ass for what I want all on their own. It's not by accident. I didn't buy big loud Marshalls to not sound like big loud Marshalls. Pedals pretty much always just detract from what I want to do. They don't help.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I need them to compensate for my amp a bit. But then I only use the SD1 as a clean boost to tighten up the flub and the equaliser to scoop out the boxiness at 400hz.

When I record with the OCD it's always straight into the clean channel and I never use more than half of the gain. The OCD makes a good tone that I want to use for the rocking section of Behind Blue Eyes at some point
