Here's that acoustic thing - now with some electrics on it - that I was working on yesterday.

Will be re-tracking it obviously, just wondering if anyone has any ideas how I can get a better sound out of this - the guitars will be twice as loud when I re-track so will have more balls. The "solo" is just an ablib place holder for now, will be sticking something decent in there.

I was thinking that I need more gain on the lead guitar, make the drums more interesting and actually play to the drums.

Nice acoustic picking and is that a bass doing the walking behind the intro or bottom end of the acoustic?
All the suggestions you made sound like good ideas.
I can't help with getting a sound - I'm sonic anemic.
Cheers

Seems to me like you already know what to do. Lol. Don't overdo the drums.

Yeah - Basically, I was gonna do what I've been doing on the last few mixes. This song was actually written by the girl who sang Got Yourself, she sent me a file of her singing and strumming an accoustic. So I've managed to turn G, Em, C and D into a song.

I'll try not to go mental on the drums and make them totally unrealistic. Struggling with acoustic recording though, weirdly seems to make quite a big difference whether I have the curtains open or closed.

Well glass is quite reflective, and acoustics are almost all about the room, so yeah.

Yeah, you've seen picks of my recording space haven't you? That 70s colour chair by the bay window so I have glass on three sides of me.

Wooo man, I played some real expensive stuff today. Did one of my guitar store runarounds with my buddy Chris. We finger-banged some real top-shelf shit today. $10k Les Paul? Yeah, hey you flunkee GC worker guy, get it down. I played #189 out of 250 Pete Townshend Gibson Custom Shop P-90 SGs...wow. That thing was so awesome. I did windmills and played Won't Get Fooled Again at max volumes. Not a bad price either. 2 grand...is a lot of money...but considering a fucking regular SG Standard is $1500 now, $2G for a Custom Shop P90 SG isn't that far into ridiculous. It was great. Lots of Friedman amps...again. I can't not love those things.

I played some Supro guitars. Weird, funky, not my thing but they're cool. The amps are great.

Johnny Marr (The Smiths) has a signature Fender Jaguar with Bare Knuckle pickups. I loved it. Ran that into a Silverface Pro Reverb. Awesome. Surf madness.

This is my buddy Chris wank-shredding all over a 59 reissue LP and a Friedman BE100. This is what we do. Go to places and molest super expensive shit all day.

Was the gain as high as it sounds, or is the phone mic distorting?

Both. The gain was way up and it was pretty loud. This was in the "platinum room" at a Guitar Center. Those Les Pauls in the background are all high dollar Custom Shop things. The amps in there are all pretty expensive. Random people kept popping their heads in there to see what all the racket was and then they' quickly leave. It was great.

At a different store's platinum room we went to yesterday, there was some flip-flop wearing sensitive hipster shmoe in there with an acoustic playing, and singing, Wonderwall and crappy shit like that. I was thinking "dude, we're about to run your ass outta here". And we did. He didn't seem happy to be displaced by the cacophony of loud amps. The thing is, the acoustic guitars have their own platinum room that he should have been doing that shit in. I had no sympathy for him. Fucking tool.

There's been loads of nostalgic articles on the BBC Music website about 1994 this week - talking about "groundbreaking" UK albums from '94. I hate them (except for The Holy Bible which is the best thing ever released in Wales)

Yeah - its fucking brilliant. One of them albums that I just want to listen to again when it finishes.

People always judge it by the fact that its a Manics album and they have a pre-concieved idea of who the Manic Street Preachers are and what they sound like. But that albums sounds like nothing they've done before or since. Even James Dean Bradfield happily admits that he knows that's the best he ever was and he'll never be that good again!

Here's the split beck pickup on my guitar going into the Dry Martini pedal and my Bandit, being picked up by the CM25 mic.

Remember I was saying about using my tremolo as a clean boost? After about 30s, I click it on - huge jump in volume. Think I play about with some bridge pickup later too.

Lol. No that definitely is not me. That's my lead guitarist. Chris. Cool dude, super nice, total shredder....on Les Pauls. He has some pointy shred wank guitars, but he mostly plays Les Pauls. And he plays the shit out of them.
