It's not that bad. To me it's just a little "sterile" for what it is. Try a different profile. Surely that fancy Kemper must have like a trillion Fender Blackface or Tweed profiles in there. Or if you want a little dirt, try some kind of Supro or AC30 profile.Armistice wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 9:01 am
Yeah - I sort of liked it when I did it but I listen to it now, an hour later, and it's grating. I've always had trouble dialling in anything but Mark Knopflerish tones - not what I'm looking for, with this guitar. I'll go back and play some more another night and see if I can get something better. I'll plug it into an actual amp as a start point, I think. Cheers

The Loved Ones. Really great band. Simple Songs. Simple Gear, Not reinventing anything. Brilliant melodies. Dave can sing the fuck out of just about anything. He's a got a wildly high range that he is 100% control of. Good band to get more into if you had the time.

Re: The Tone Thread
Thats pretty pristine Armi. I like it as is. I like the rattle and grit lumped in with the diamond cut clarity it would cut thru one of your mixes really nicely.Armistice wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 8:03 am I'm just mucking around, trying to acquaint the guitars I don't normally play with the Kemper. This is a straight out of the box (literally) Matchless profile with my Levinson "strat". Treble pick up. Everything flat on the profile. As an exercise to see if I can get recordable tones.
Matchless AV30 Strat tone.mp3
No doubt it's a bit rattly - I sort of got more interested in the riff, which I just made up, than the tone. Not sure what I'd do with it, and whether the second phrase "works", but still. It's Monday night, so it's a start.![]()
Comments/suggestions on tone and/or riff appreciated. I know it's not, tonally, everyone's cup of tea.
Cheers
2nd listen, I can see that going into any jam you do just as it is based on the last honey hunters things. It sounds like you, and the tone is not as smooth as some of your others but it can definitely have a home anywhere. i like it. The riff is cool too. it feels like a bit more darker and edgier Armi.

Re: The Tone Thread
Bass Tone Check! I don't know if you guys want to break out bass tones into their own thread or not but speak up if you do ?
The last bunch of songs i ever did the bass was always just DI and chuck a sim on it and call it a day becasue who really cares? no one is listening to the bass. But i kind of want it to sounds good now. I treat my bass like an ugly step child that lives under the stairs.
Today i spent pretty much all afternoon playing with my amps and some mics and i got this. I won't bore you with all the settings because i can promise none of you care. Except maybe rayc I think he would care? He seems like a bass dude. Even so i am not going to bother. Keep in mind this is going into mostly punk rock , rock and roll up tempo songs.

I have the cab on it's side upper Eminence speaker is miced with an Apex- D1 mic on the seam of the cone and cap, and the lower speaker of the same species is miced with the e906 mid way up the cone 45deg off axis pointed toward the cap. this was the best results i got.
I tried a bunch of different mic settings and placements and had the big D1 mic off axis for a better part of the day but after taking a break from it and coming back and listening i realized how dumb that was. It was void of any meat and i am renting this thing for a bass amp so i moved it the nicest spot i could find on axis and i got all that meat back. I used the e906 to kind of fine tune some of the other stuff. I think on it's own it sounds a little mid scooped and a lot heavy on the bottom but not in a way i think would make for a shitty mix. I say that, but i have also been listening to this stupid thing for over 4.5 hours so i could be way out to lunch. I think it could work. Its clean. I don't know. I'm going for supper because my fingers a freaking throbbing. What a newb.

WhiskeyJack You've bottom end and top end: meat & potatoes.
I think that'd be cool in a mix - particularly something punky.
Capture it with some light compression going in - if you have a comp pedal or outboard unit- just to make things easier ITB.

Re: The Tone Thread
Cool thanks dudes. Reassuring. Wont change a thing for to now.
rayc would there be much difference to just track raw and compress after? What would be the benefit to compress on the way in. I always really worry that when i print anything on the way in its done and can not be undone without retracking? I think bass could be different given all those wild transients here and there so correct me if i am wrong. This is uncharted territory for me so any guidance is appreciated.
Armistice that was likely a riff from Fugazis song Blueprint that i just remustered into a bass riff. It sounds cooler on bass. To me anyways
Ok onwards. Bye.

Re: The Tone Thread
I got it from a flea market. I slid buddy 20 bucks i think because it had no price tag on it and he had no idea if it worked or not. His wife didnt seem thrilled about it. She had some pretty outlandush prices on the other really cool old mics on that table but none of them had guts in them and she still wanted 100 or more for the shells of them.
Was a bargain for sure.
Yea bass day was fun. Id like it to have abit more grit and OD but we will start here. Thanks dude.
Re: The Tone Thread
WhiskeyJack You've nailed that bass-tone mate. Cracking sound. I'd be well happy with that on any recording.
I've never actually recorded bass through a mic'd up amp. I've only ever DI'd.

Re: The Tone Thread
right?! Like that is 99% of all i have ever done too. But i figured you know what? i got the tools may as well give it a go. to be honest i really like the mic'd sound. I still will have a DI of the same performance just in case i need to fill in some sonic blanks but really, i think that is more than enough. I fit it in in and around my scratch tracks and it sounds pretty decent. Believe it or not i am getting closer to having a finished project for the Recording Challenge. not at all on my own deadline i set but whatever. It's coming.
Thanks JD.

I saw that. He highlights some of the differences we talked about before with your Superbass > Superlead conversion.

Re: The Tone Thread
Yeah, the board was different etc. but it did cover the territory and reinforce the differences.
I was able to feel less dumb watching it because you'd already taught me a bunch of it.
THANKS.

Re: The Tone Thread
Ha well we learn this stuff together.
The boards being different is mostly just a visual thing. Turret vs PCB. In 1973 Marshall switched from a turret board layout to a PCB. The circuit and components didn't change, just the board they sit on. In a blind sound test I bet no one, NO ONE, can tell the difference between a early 73 turret board Marshall and a late 73 PCB Marshall. And if there is a difference in sound, it's not the board.

I literally added that to my watch later list this afternoon to watch tonight. (Thats a mouthful) I've been waiting so long to see the whole thing. The 3 min trailer has been popping up in my suggestions for months.Greg_L wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 11:52 pm @WhiskeyJack
