To get the studio kit - and I think you need the kit because of the rosin - it would be $170 AUD landed in Australia - bit much for what may, or may not, be useful - as an experiment. I think it could be handy for subtle violin-y bits in tunes, but not sure I'd want to be attempting the Devil Goes Down To Georgia style histrionics with it. There may well be a free VST that does roughly the same thing - I've never looked...

I have an eBow - a gift before the moratorium on musical gifts was put into place - sits in its box and has for about 15 years. Was fun for about 2 hours, but I don't think I've ever used it in a recording.

Resisting the urge at this point. You should buy one and tell me what you think...

Yeah, tight fisted me!
I've actually used my cello bow on the lower strings and bass.
Round wound strings tear the poo out of the bow hairs.
I haven't tried it on my bas wound bass though...perhaps I ought.
eBow, and I bought a knockoff - of course, really only seems to shine when some overdrive is added to the signal and some feedback too...
I've used it to record thrice so it's not been an economical acquisition for me either.
I've watched the training vid for the real ones and they can be quite versatile but suspect a lot of editing was done to remove the string change glitches and the hammer on thing.
Back to the tiny bow - I suspect you could get something similar with anything your can draw across the string if it'll grip a little and cause the thing to resonate.

Seems an interesting premise. A lot less space and generally cheaper than a real bow if limited in it's ability to play like a real violin.

I'm sure that guy is exceptionally good at doing it, but I think this actually sounds pretty good. If you wanted to wang some strings on a recording it would be quite handy.

Yeah, I'm surprised how good it sounds, but I know how beginners on actual violin struggle to get a usable note happening, so I suspect this is nowhere near as easy as he makes it look.

I had a hands on play with one of these things a short wile ago. You need to dial in the amp quite a bit to get a decent strings like sound and I got bored with it pretty quick.

That's weird cos when I was a student many moons ago in a shared house we built a toilet seat out of a banjo.
