Rebelmind - Breed

Post by vomitHatSteve »

I'll probably need to tweak the mix a little, but here's my version of Breed for the recording challenge

:lollers: You mean the ukulele chorus, the pick scrape, or the drop out with the bike bell?
I guess the answer to all 3 is: I wasn't gonna learn the solo, so I had to do something for a middle 8.

Ha ha... suitably weird! Nice work. :lollers: Kurty must be getting up a fair rate of spin now down there in the ground from our combined efforts to debase his material.

I came here expecting VHS madness and that is what i got but it still, somehow, surpassed my expectations. This actually feels like it was meant to be heard this way. I don't really have much in the way of nits outside of your vox seem to be a lil dark and and get a wee bit buried in the choruses.

That's all i got but for the exercise itself it think it's a homerun.

Sounds, for what it's worth, like the sort of covers Devo did before they released the debut album. Like the STIFF EP version of satisfaction. That rubberbandish bass n all. That's a very good thing to me.

How does one even begin to mix critique something like this? :cuckoo: :lollers: It's so out there, one can only assume it's exactly as you want it. How do you do the 8-bit computer noises? And I'm really enjoying that several of the Rebels are taking an opportunity to reference other bands, classic phrases, and styles with easter eggs and other "Musikalischer Spaß" .

:coolstorybro: Good work.

Thanks folks!

Yeah, WJ, I think I agree on the vox feeling a little buried.

I can see the Devo comparison. Tho it's a band I've barely actually listened to!

The bleep-bloopy computer noises are generated in software. Mostly SoX with a ruby wrapper. They're also randomized so that when I post the next mix, they'll be mostly different.

This is perfect. The electronics give it the same energy as the original, just with a different flavor of crazy. Brilliant.

I fucking love that bicycle bell.

I love all the weirdness, even the saturated and muddy Uke breakdown. Top-notch.

And once again I'm preferring a rebel version to the original.
This is great ..... high energy, lots of variety in the sounds ..... well recorded.
I wish everything was a bit more distinct ..... sometimes it's all mushed together. Could be your intent but personally I like everything to be hearable separately. ...... and the vox is, indeed, a little low.

But I like this a lot and expect to hear ya'll are doing it live soon.

Steve, listening to this again this morning - its amazing.
I agree with Bubba though - its almost impossible to critique one of your mixes generally and this one is even weirder than usual. The distorted uke, hand claps and bike bell are great.

New mix in the OP. Mostly just boosted the vocals overall plus a little dialing in of the reverb. I feel better about the brightness with that.

It's surprising how big a difference smallish tweaks make.

Sounds great - listened to this heaps of times now. I'll probably compile myself a playlist into an album at some point when everyone is done.

Rock and roll!

Honestly, I kind of want to see if we can get this compilation put up on Spotify, etc. once it's all said and done.
