Manslick - i wish i was a ferryman

Post by Manslick »

Hey friends. :)
I hope to bend your ear on this tune.
simply a singer songwriter affair.
I recorded it Vox and guitar some years ago.
Yet today, yes today - March 18 2023 I managed to record new and more simple drums and better bass and a new shaker and then insert some stryngs right/
So if you are so inclined please say it sucks.
Or WTF is this shit at 3:20??
Many thanks - I love you all.

The words and chords
C#m
I wish I was the ferry man
I wish I was the ferry man
F#
Standing on the bank of the river
C#m
I wish I was the ferry man
F#
Standing on the bank of the river

B
Waiting for those to come
So they can cross
C#m
I wish I was the ferry man
F#
Bright sun on the sinew
B
So you might continue on your way

C#m
I wish I was the ferry man
F#
Standing on the bank of the river
B
Hauling on a rope all day
E
I wish I was the ferry man
F#
Standing on the bank of the river
B
So you might continue on your way
C#m
I wish I was the ferry man

The strength in his hands
The sun on his sinew
So you might continue on your way
From one side
To the other

I wish I was the ferry man
Standing on the bank of the river
I wish I was the ferry man
And I'd be a giver
I wish I was the ferry man
And I'd be a giver
sun on the sinew
So you might continue on your way
Wish I was the ferry man
Standing on the bank of the river
So you might continue on your way
Wish I was the ferry man

I like this quite a bit, it's like somewhere between the Beatles and the Decemberists. I like the vibe. It's got a great groove to it too.

The vocal is a little tough to make out through a lot of it, but I'd bet that just turning down the acoustic guitar a bit would help. That might end up leaving the kick/snare/ride a little too loud so those might need a little trim with a compressor or just a couple of dB down if the guitar comes down. I love whatever the percussion thing is over on the right side. maybe a really dead floor tom? it's just got a cool low "whack" to it.

Love it, glad to hear you're making some music man!

I really like what I can hear but that acoustic is too loud. Bring that down, bring the vocals up a touch.

There's a great little tune in there, just needs to tinkering with the mix. :coolstorybro:

hey brother how are you doing?
Thanks for spending time on this ditty.
You are correct about the AC guitar/vox too loud.
As it's all one track maybe one day I will redo it all.
Love :)

Thanks for stopping by MC - yeah I will work(?) on that guitar/vox track.
honestly i need to rerecord it all, that GV track is joined at the hip and I aunt got the chops to fix it sonically. It be easer for me just to redo the whole thing.

+1 on the vocals getting pretty buried. I think the bass is probably a culprit too. I feel like the low mids are getting pretty crowded.
It sounds like your intention as things progress and more instruments come in to completely wash out the vox, right? I think making them start clearer would help emphasize that.

Good Beatles vocal affection.

Doing great for the most part, thanks for asking!

Yeah that's tough when the tracks are baked together. That's some expert level stuff to deal with, aside from just retracking. Well I hope that time and opportunity abound and you get to take another stab at it. But this was a fun song to listen to, I really enjoyed it.

Vocals are very buried. They sound really "un-compressed" too in the way that they drop in an out.
The guitars are definitely too loud, but that bass tone right in your face too which along with the clicky kick makes it a bit uncomfortable to listen to.

Feel like you need to totally re-start the mix on this to get all of the bits playing nice together.

Agree on the guitar level. It's got a bunch of low end too. A bit of boxiness too.

Bass is a little muddy and indistinct.

Vocal is sung very well. Sounds like an excellent vocal track.

Snare is a little slappy. Kick is real boxy and has a strange sounding attack.

Cool jam Manslick!! I didn't listen to alot of beatles growing up at all. But what i do know of them is that this could easily pas for a bealtes jam to my untrained ears.

Shame your vox and guitar are all one track. The performances are great and everything sounds good it just needs a good re mixing is all. Might be tough to do if all the stuff is in one pot.

Still a very cool recording! Gotta love those days when you get the place to yourself! Hope you are well buddy!

thank you all lovers
here is a mix in which i tamped down the other tracks so my goal - wait - soul - goal hmm
well anyway attached is a version in which i tried to embody the original singer songwriter event
then along with a subdued producer revisit

It does sound more like an event.
The kick is a bit modern but that's a small thing.
Nice one.
Cheers
