SPIDER

Post by rayc »

Here's another newie:
Spider 3.mp3
Hmmm, couldn't live with with faders up.
Here's a tidier, slightly more dynamic take:

Did a little more dynamics tweaking and replaced the chorus drums.
BIAB lead part.

Some subtle, & some less so, tweaks...

Fiddled with the dynamics after the solo.

Here's a version with less reverb on the 12 string tracks

and here's the same with the draft/sketch vocal melody - I'm using ReaTune to try to make it more "melodic" and will then attempt to learn it.

VOX melody, phrasing etc. almost ready for me to retrack. This version has aggressive chopping & tuning to achieve that.

Here's a slightly more developed version in terms of vocals. I've sorted the "melody", know where the phrasing needs work and need the opportunity to attempt to "sing" it based on the tweaks.

Worked on the phrasing a bit more.
This needs a singer - reminiscent of the Lightning seeds in some spots.

This is about as far as I can take it without a proper singer:
Spider14.mp3
It's all Amp In A Box stuff - be it the Behringer bass DI or the Joyo ACtone.
I've used cab convolutions made by Greg to make things less eeek.
Knockhoffner, Squiestang & Harleybacker 12 string at this point. I need to work on the arrangement - pulling things in & out.
For now it's almost all horses at peak.
Thoughts?

LYRICS - an unpleasant read - sorry.
A few references that may be lost on those who weren't Australian kids in the 60s or TV watchers from the same era.
Escape into a nursery rhyme
Little Golden Book or two
Wooden seat, wooden desk
Wooden rule on legs for you
Times were simpler
But evil preached & taught
Fresh milk delivered daily
Still the innocents were caught

A diet of Combat, Disney, Magazines
Where boys don’t cry – no in between
The Monkee Mobile & Batman’s too
What would The Man From Uncle do?
And the itsby bitsy spider
From behind its rock came out
With the power of authority
As our parents would spout.
You must respect your elders
You must all know our place
You must only speak when spoken to
You must look them in the face

Sun warmed milk
No matter your lactose state
Stacked in steel crates
By the cyclone fence gate
In the 50s of silence
The 60s of obey
There was no escape
There was no chance to say

Saved from the inkwell smear
A yellow, plastic tube of blue
When the corporeal was real to fear
What would Crusader Rabbit do?
And the itsby bitsy spider
From behind its rock came out
With the power of authority
As our parents would spout.
We must respect our elders
We must all know our place
We must only speak when spoken to
We must look them in the face

A transistor radio so soon to be a teen
Where girls don’t tell – just be seen
Maxwell Smart & 99 too
What would The Beaver do?
And the itsby bitsy spider
From behind its rock came out
With the power of authority
As our parents would spout.
I must respect my elders
I must know my place
I must only speak when spoken to
I must look them in the face

Sugar & spice the girl must be nice
Snips & snails the boys’ face turns pale
Neither was given the skills to survive
The danger not strangers but those in the hive.
We must respect your elders
We must all know our place

Melody - ooh, that'll be difficult.

Ray, its all sounding awash with reverb again. This'll probably change when you get real instruments on it.
That being said, the bass sounds nice and the changes are interesting and unexpected but they totally work.

James,
I gave the 12 string accent track & the 12 string arpeggio guitars, as well as the BIAB lead, a quick bath to see if it could get a Richard Hawley vibe a la Sky's Edge. Clearly unsuccessful.
I've changed the amount of reverb on the 12 string but left it the same of the lead as it, well, being BIAB it needs it...only until I replace it though.
Updated version in the O.P.
Thanks.

I listened to mix 1, mix7, and then mix7 with vocal.

Definite progress between mixes 1 and 7. Too much reverb - it mushed everything together. It's cleaned up pretty well in 7

The vocal could maybe come up a bit. Although it's quiet, it has a real nice tone to it. I liked the way it sounds.

Personal preference - but I would have liked a little less distortion on the strummed guitar. It would give it a little more definition. Just my preference.

Kick sound is cool. So is the snare.

The bass sound was not bad, but like the guitars I would like a little more definition to it. But that's a minor nit.

Ray, I'm on version 9 (9? WTF?)
The vocal is super low and mumbley in this - can't make out a word of it!

Yeah, delib so as it's just me sorting out phrasing & "melody" I'll post #10 which has a clearer vocal but still choppy experiments with phrasing (particularly in verse two).

I'll have a squiz at dealing with the strummed guitar. There's some definition peak EQ on the bass but the 12 string masks it so I'll look for another freq to boost.
THANK YOU.

I listened to 11B. I focused mostly on the vocal.

I don't know if it's mic technique or not. Most of it is clear, but every once in a while the vocal gets muffled. Maybe it was due to your retracking parts? The clear sections sound pretty good.

Pitch is pretty good. But I would punch out a couple of spots:

"Golden" at :31
"do" at 2:18
"Stranger" at 3:57
