HAPPY SONG featuring GREG

Post by rayc »

This song was marginally improved with some vocal Spectrum Matching work but majorly improved by Greg's lead guitar work:
AH HA!
I see a potential cause of the problem. As usual I had the song mastered for CD and it's hot for MP3 & streamers so here're a pair that are rendered at -13.9 Lufs:
Happy Song Lufed.mp3
Happy Song B Lufed.mp3

(The 1st MP3 I uploaded seemed problematic so I've used Reaper to convert and put both versions in...)
HAPPY SONG.mp3
HAPPY SONG B.mp3
She wants
A happy song, please
She wants the sort of one
That isn't creepy
One that's fun
Happy song
A happy song, please
One that won't make her frown
One that doesn't bring her down

1Happiness is
Happiness to you
Happy songs too
Are not the sort of songs I tend to do

What she wants
Is what she wants to get
She wants the sort of thing
She doesn't have yet
Clappy song
A clappy song, please
One that doesn't bring her down
One that won't make her frown

Clappiness is
Clappiness to you
Clappy songs too
Are not the sort of songs I like to do

What we want
Is what we strive to get
We want the sorts of things
We don't have yet
Happy song
And clappy song, please
Ones that don't bring us down
Ones that won't make us frown

Sappiness is
Sappiness to you
Sappy songs too
Are not the sort of songs I care to do

When we smile
Is what we feel and yet
They 're the sorts of things
We should forget
Happy songs
Sappy clappy songs , please
Ones that don't bring us down
Ones that won't make us frown

Clappiness is
Clappiness to you
Clappy songs too
Are not the sort of songs I wish to do
Happiness is
Happiness to you
Happy songs too
Are not the sort of songs I like to do

I like the song a lot.

I like the bass part. Bass tone is good too. Maybe turn it down a db? It's plenty easy to hear.

The guitar lead/riff is cool and sounds good.

I thought the rhythm guitars are a little dark. Maybe add (back) some high midrange. And/or cut the mud-range? Either way, I don't think large adjustments are needed.

The kick and cymbals sound good. The snare is a little dark.

The handclaps are a great addition.

I like the guitar decay/fade at the very end.

Is this the louder version? Seems a little mangled. I prefer the more subdued version.

Fun song though, thanks for inviting me in on it. I'll get you those vid clips soon.

Thanks,
if only you'd suggested those before I sent it for mastering. Oh well. Much appreciated.
I did consider brightening my guitars after Greg's lead went in but I reasoned that the difference highlighted the lead...my system does seem to produce darker tones.

I've removed that one and put both versions up PLUS used a different converter.
Thanks for playing on it - you lifted it enormously.

Ray - your vocal seems improved a lot on this. You're sounding more and more like Syd Barrett. Have you subtly ReaTuned it loads, or have you just practiced?

I agree that the bass could probably come down a notch or two. It's very clear and has a lot of wiggle room volume-wise.

Claps sound good. Did you do them yourself? What process did you use for getting them?

The lead guitars feel a little narrow. I don't know if there's a good way to get some more stereo width on them, but I'd be interested in hearing it.

Sounding like you're having a good time while singing has been good for your performance I think. You've got more energy and a bit more projection than usual here.

Nice tunage ray. All comes together well.

Seeing you've mastered it I won't pick nits with anything.

(And I recently had a similar "conversation" with GF about song/lyrical themes. Glad you've written this so I don't have to... :lollers: )

I experienced an overwhelming urge to cut my own ears off and stick them in a blender to forestall any attempts at their reconstruction.

Pick away David - grist for the next song if nothing else.
Thanks.

In part it's more singing but also the use of the Spectrum Matching VST to get a better "sound" to my hack.

Thanks Bob, @Bubba,
You ought to have used something more emphatic than "forestall".
Better to feed those ears to the pigs: they, at least, may make a sow's ear of them eventually and that might lead to a silk purse somewhere along the evolutionary path.

Love this Ray! I agree with JD, your voice is very clear in this. Yep, need more happy songs, I'm hoping to write more of those myself this year, with any luck!
Good job, as always!

Coming in on the last mix. This has all the hallamrks of what i consider to be a ray sound and a Greg vibe on the leads. Pretty cool stuff. I don't have anything to add at this point. It's a pretty solid mix. Although when it first fired up it kind of hit mears as though something was clipping hard and creating a sonic bit of mushy white noise? Or just mushy.... notably from 0:17 to 0:20 when the vox kick in? Sounded weird.

Sorry i have been sleeping on all the songs in the forum guys i have had a shit two weeks.
