The Lonely Life Of Chester Smythe

Post by Mr Clean »

You know those songs that you write, you're not really sure of but then do a demo of, this is one of them. I wrote it about a year ago, roughly.....did a demo and never really thought much of it. Going through some stuff tonight on, I found it again. I actually quite like it, such as it is. I was going to go through every day of the week with the lyrics but lost momentum and just repeated myself in the song. I'm now thinking I should finish it off. It's very twee and very British but it is what it is.

The Lonely Life Of Chester Smythe

Chester Smythe.mp3
Lyrics

Monday morning comes around again
He tips his hat and says hello to people that he doesn't know
But all the same, life's a funny game we play

And it's off to work by bus and then the train
He reads the lonely columns only dreaming what tomorrow brings
Is only rain, nothing seems to change

And it's only fun, that makes this life worth living
All denied, for poor old Chester

Tomorrow is another working day.
He whistles as he walks along the concrete and the cobbles
But it's all a chore, life's become a bore

Although Wednesday evening he has got a date
Bingo with his Mother though he wished he had another
To share all his days because his Mother says

That it's only love, that makes your heart start singing
All denied, for poor old Chester Smythe
He's got his slippers and his pipe

Now this might sound familiar, to the sheltered lives
But it may sound perculiar to the ones
Who's weekend always comes
Always.....

Holy shit, I love this.

If the piano were a real one, it’d be perfect. Want any harmonies or backing vocals on it? I’d love to sing on this.

Part Beatles, part 1st album Bee Gees, part very early Nilsson with some Kinks added and all very charming in quite a Dukes of Stratosphere way.
I really like it BUT you had me hoping for the rest of the week.
Any chance of revisiting?
I can hear Supergrass banging this out.
Oh, the period bass is bloody good.
Cheers

Yeah my old Clavinova isn't amazing but it gets the job done for me.

I might take you up on some backing/harmonies. :coolstorybro:

I thought you would get the Bee Gees influence. I'd been listening to that album constantly at the time. I learned to play Craise Finton Kirk around the same time. I even stole the melody for the first line, tentatively.

Like I said, I got a bit lost on the way to the weekend, that's why I did the middle 8 with the "weekend never comes" bit. I kinda like it how it is but I'd like to get to Friday at least.

Cheers :coolstorybro:

Very British and reminds me of something that I can't quite put my finger on.

Well done. :like:

This is really good, Mr Clean.
Very 90s/60s. You know, the stuff that was released in the 90s where they were consciously trying to play 60s stuff.

Think the bass is touch quiet. Nice bass sound, think it just needs to come up a little in the mix.
There's something a bit thin about the vocal like you've hi-passed it too high or hit it a little too hard with some sort of saturation plug-in.

I always like listening to you mono mixes.

@Mr Clean

I really like this. A mash up of 60s and 70s British bands. Cool lyric too.

Very well done.

Haha. My music is part Chameleon and part Magpie. It could be literally anything.

Haha. Nice one mate, that's pretty cool. Do you want me to send you the stems to have a play with it?
