DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
Someone in the BIAB forum made mention of Drums On Demand and had had a good experience with them. They offer multitracks so I went to have a look.
There was a special on & I decided to buy & try...it cost US$14 for the multis to two "songs".
The multis are 24 bit and come in both PC & Crapple formats:
Stereo OH file
Stereo Room mic file
Stereo Tom file
Mono kick
Mono Snare
Mono HiHat
a MIDI part marker file that shows up as text on a MIDI track and inserts part markers at the top of the project in Reaper.
a stereo mixed file and a
mono supercompressed/excited full mix file.
The recordings are in a song format - intro v1, v2 etc - that can be cut n pasted as desired...I've not attempted that.
Above is a "song" I recorded using the structure of the drums' "song".
I mixed, initially, to match the stereo file in the package and then to my taste. I based the EQing on @Greg_L 's article on the matter but varied it to taste and context.
I used a little bit of the rooms file and the squashed file for dynamics in a few places.

That's not too bad. The snare is all crack. Needs a little more body to it. The compression is a little heavy on the hats and toms. Cool stuff though.

Thanks Greg,
I'll go back in and address those things. It was an interesting exercise to go back into multitracks...more time etc. but a far better result. Working from your guide was very helpful. The files were pretty good to work with and the only thing I couldn't work around was the harsh cymbal , China?, in a few places...it sounded harsh and nasty.
Again, thanks.

Re: DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
This is a sample of the multis mixed but no FX then with some FX.
It includes the room mics and the smashed file as well-- I did it so that there was the sound of the compete package.
The mix with fx in the "song" is different and in context I hope.

Re: DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
I forget, is Bandi N just stereo tracks, or do they give you multi tracks too?
Re: DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
It's not too bad. The snare is really getting a lot of work done to it. I'd like a little more natural sound. That's pretty "finished" sounding.

Yes, BIAB is just a stereo file.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Sep 06, 2021 10:51 pm I forget, is Bandi N just stereo tracks, or do they give you multi tracks too?

Re: DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
I attempted what was suggested re snare, toms and OHs @Greg_L.
This time it's just the drums...no context. I left in the level changes, introduction or room mics and the smashed file where they were in the "song"...

Re: DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
Here's the 2nd set of mulititracks. It has a TOM track but with no toms...I left it in to hear if it added anything.
A Tambourine track in this set plus the usual.
Mix as per the stereo version then tweaked as per the last mix.
The ROOM & Smashed files are added, in little amounts, to the chorus.

Both of those are very very compressed. Are they coming that way? The second one is a little better, a little more open.rayc wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 5:54 am Here's the 2nd set of mulititracks. It has a TOM track but with no toms...I left it in to hear if it added anything.

Re: DRUMS ON DEMAND sample.
I think the last, dryer mix definitely works best. The heavy 'verb on the earlier ones sounds way more "arena rock" than I picture you doing.
There is a lot of tail on that snare.
