Your perfect vocal mic

What type and size you need, and where you should point it. Does a large diaphragm do a better job in preventing pregnancy than a small? WTF is phantom power and why do you need it? All these important questions and more, discussed within. Entendre at your own risk.

Your perfect vocal mic

Post by CrowsofFritz »

Anyone have a vocal mic that’s absolutely perfect for them? I’ve tried all kinds of mics and nothing fits it better so far than the MXL 4000. It might be that massive bump in the high frequencies, but it just works.

I can get by with just about any mic for vocals.

I bounce around and use different vocal mics. I can't say that any of them would be my be-all end-all vocal mic. I love my LDC mics for the detail and vocal-oriented EQ curve for when that's appropriate, but I also really like the sound of an SM57 or an MD-421 on vocals. On backing vocals, I tend to use my really dark ribbons (Fatheads). I mainly just grab whatever is either already on the stand, or whatever I'm "feeling" at the time.

One of these days, I'm going to splurge on a U47, U67 or U87. Then I can record my mediocre vocals in the highest definition possible :D :D :D

Same, but I am very attached to my Samson S-12s.

I really don’t like the AT 2020 on my voice. It sounds so dull.

For my voice... I like unplugged mics.

Failing that, my NT1 is the best I've tried so far.

ANY mic will capture my voic well enough. Sadly my voice needs quite a bit of EQ boosting in some VERY weak frequencies. In terms of condensers
I have an AT2020 which is fine and a Focusrite which is a little better for me and a Behringer which is almost as good as the other two.
Cheers

I like my Aston Origin.

But I have found the more I record, I can make most mics work, there is no magic pill to replace a great performance.

I’ve still been trying to record on my AT 2020. I just can’t make it work. Sounds good for my guitar, but not vocals. It might work better for female vocals, though.

I agree with this actually. Gear, within reason, is overrated.
