Demos of it sound really good. They do a bigger version too which isn't actually that much more expensive, but I don't need even half the functionality that this one has.

as a modeler user I can say you're right about that if all you were originally wanting was a tiny amp for headphone use.
Even the more modest modelers have LOTS of stuff

If you get a modeler there will be a learning curve and the biggest thing is to not get overwhelmed by the choices.

Just have fun with the thing.

Yeh, I have a tendency to get crippled by option paralysis! And just don't even play at all... just spend hours going through menus.
Its not just looking for a sound, I'm also really OCD about knowing how something works... and I won't just be able to relax and use the bloody thing until I know what every menu and sub-menu does.

Its cheap though. I think I'll get it.

here's how I start with a modeler ..... I look thru the amps and find the best clean amp sound I can find, just like I would if I were actually buying an amp.

Then I don't even look at the other amps and use the built-in distortions and overdrives to get those sounds just like I would have to if I bought that clean amp ... find that one amp and act like it's the only amp in there for a while.

I know - I'm not expecting wonders... but if I can get usable tones and fun effects to mess about with in the evenings then I'll be happy.
Its got a looper function and stuff too so it'll probably be a useful writing tool.

I've been using low-end modelers for some years and I'm fairly picky about my sound.
They've gotten better and better and this one's prolly better than the 4 year old RP360 I use and the RP360 is fairly bad ass sounding.

They've gotten better and better and this one's prolly better than the 4 year old RP360 I use and the RP360 is fairly bad ass sounding.

I'll report back when I've got some sounds.
I'll record the headphone out sound so you'll know what's in my ears at wine time in the evening.

Success! This little fucker does what I want it to do!
Haven't worked out the menu and shit yet. It's clearly very versatile. But it gives a usable tone in my headphones which is what I want.

Like @Lt. Bob said, I've chosen a basic clean amp (65 DLX Clean). I'm assuming that's a 65 Delux and working from there.

I haven't worked out the presets, recall and how to use the Wah yet. But I don't care that much anyway. I know how to add modulation, delay and overdrive to my clean tone.

This thing was less than 150 quid... @Armistice you should get one to help you stop abusing yourself too much before your Mrs turns up.

In my, admittedly limited, experience with this kind of stuff the Deluxe sims seem to be the ones that work best as a starting point. For whatever reason, the Deluxe sims almost always sound good, if not really good. The rest usually require more tweaking than I'm willing to do. But again, just my experience.
