Stupid Saving Error

Post by JD01 »

OK, so I opened up on of my previous projects, one of the better ones that I quite like, 'cos I want to use it as a template.
So I deleted all the tracks and markers from it, just left the drum buss, reverb buss, bass track and basics of the rhythm guitar buss in it...

However, instead of saving it as a template. I just pressed Save. So, I've saved a completely empty project over my nearly completed one.
OK, so I still have all of the tracks in the directory (Shit, not the drum MIDI :spacepalm: ). Is there any way of me retrieving this one?

If you are on windows I think windows does not actually erase the file when you delete it so it's still there

Did you try the Reaper backup file? I think Reaper automatically retains the version of a project before you save a new one.

Cubase and nuendo save a .bak file that is the previous version. I assume other daws do something similar.

I've never had to try this so I don't know what to look for. But I'll have a go later.

I did the same thing the other day and ruined a project, but at least I had a nice new template. Bummer.

It's my tendency to do similar things that now has me saving each session with an incrementally different name so I could just return to the previous version...not the same as the lost one but close.

Depending upon what else you've done since, there may be a recent restore point you can reset the entire computer to an earlier point in time.

I'd be surprised if Reaper didn't autosave every 15 minutes anyway by default - most "creative" software packages have such a feature specifically to save this sort of angst.

Sure it'll feature on the Cockos forum somewhere - you won't be the first person to have done this.

Yes, the .bak file is supposed to be the second most recent save.

If you haven't closed the project yet, you could try mashing the "undo" button for several minutes?

*****.rpp-bak ?

Do a search of the entire project folder for that and make sure you have the view enabled to see hidden files and file extensions.

Mine look like this. ^^^^

They have that little circle arrow icon. Click that and it takes you to the previous version of the project before the last save.

Fucking hell, Greg? Are you on Windows 95?

Now I know what I'm looking for. I'll see if I can find one.
