That link to the vocal rider from waves confirmed my thoughts...it's smoke n mirrors...the explanation & demonstration were unclear and seemed to be aimed at putting ideas in a head so that the head heard what it was told.

Re. #2 - one of the good things about some of the ReaComp presets (mainly the snare ones) is that they DO specify the amount of gain reduction you should aim for. I use the ReaComp presets all the time, but you obviously (or so I thought) have to edit the threshold parameter to cater for your particular signal strength.
