Recording Challenge #8 - It’s the Digital Era

Post by CrowsofFritz »

All of you old, analog fuddie duddies are gonna have a hard time with this one, but let’s see you do it!

Challenge - Write a song using a drum machine. EDIT: Specifically a 16 step sequencer. It can be a physical device or in the form of a VST.

If you’re unable to use any, I can provide you with a beat. You can layer real drums on top if you want to do some cool John Frusciante style drum stuff, too.

heatmiser you still here? You’re good at this.

Dude, probably like 99.3962% of home recordings are done with fake drums.

You mean literally a drum machine rather than VSTi or other software drums? (which most of us are doing)

I've got a VSTi of a drum machine that I've used. Does that count?

I already have an idea in my head. I’ve never been this excited about recording a song in the future. It’s not in time because I can play with a click track without the click stupidly recording, but that will be fixed once I get the interface that Tadpui has graciously given to me.

I used a drum machine from about 85 until 2013.
I still have two.
Do you mean a song built on a foundation of drum machine or song made of drum machine only?
Cheers

Just has to have drum machines in it. That’s cool that you have physical machines. I always wanted one. But the one in Reason is just too good not to use.

Am i on crack or is there no drums of any variety in this?

It’s just the idea. It’s not the finished song. There will be a drum machine behind the tune when it’s finished. Hopefully by Tuesday.

So, again, what's the definition of a "drum machine" here? If you're using something in Reason, that is not a "drum machine', surely?

Who has one anyway? VSTi drums, sure, but I gifted my last drum machine 10 years ago. Good riddance.

Pretty much every track on my last two albums has "fake drums" - no need to do anything then? I'll just submit one of those...

I'm truly not seeing how using a "drum machine" - irrespective of what that means - is a recording challenge.

It’s a virtual drum machine. It’s different from “fake drums,“ which strives to be as realistic as possible.

And well, there’s only so many challenges you can do that’s actually recording related, so the next step is to do something songwriting related.

I guess the definition should be narrowed to a 16 step sequencer.

I have a drumb machine of course ...... a Boss DR550
But I mostly use my keyboard as a drumb machine.

So a question:
Does the keyboard count? ..... it's a sequencer.

Or is the point to use those cheesy pre programmed drum beats?

I like this idea, I guess I just don't actually know what a drum machine is. They're all fake drums to me. If it's not a real drummer playing real drums, then it's fake drums.

So do you mean this has to be done with one of those things where you have to tap on pads with your fingers to make drum sounds?
