VST Compressor Comparison

Post by JD01 »

OK, so part of my mission to get better at singing and mixing vocals.
I've always been skeptical about magic VSTs unless they say that they actually do something in particular.
I think Greg_L (correct me if I'm wrong, mate) has always said they're basically all the same, its just a question of what interface you like to work with.

So, I managed to install the Antress Modern compressor and set it up similar to my usual Red3 compressor.
What you think?

To me, they sound pretty much identical. If you were really concentrating it could seem like the Modern is a tiny bit overdriven in comparison and its also a tiny bit louder in this case which could be what I'm hearing. Any difference I think is more likely to be down to slightly different settings on different interfaces rather than a difference in sound of the VST.

What you think?

They are pretty much identical. I gave it a few more concentrated listens on the word "mistaaaaaakkkee" so i could ping ping back and forth pretty quickly. If anything, and this is a stretch, for that part i mentioned, i want to say that the Red3 has an ever ever ever so slight brittle glassyness to it. Like slight. Like none listening to the song when it's done is going to say, "hmm seems glassy" Not at all to it's detriment. That's just what my ears think they are hearing. Maybe i am only hearing it because my brain is looking for a difference.

But at the end of the day they are identical.

Yeah - I think so to. Red has a slightly friendlier interface - its brighter and you can see what's going on more easily. I'll just use that.
I'm trying to find the Antress Deathcore, but I haven't located it yet. I'd like to see if that's actually any different.

I do think most plug-in compressors are the same unless they're designed to mimic specific hardware compressors that have their own sound.

In this example, I think the Antress Modern has a slightly heavier but smoother compression that balances things out just a hair better. But as a user of that compressor I'm very used to it's "sound", so maybe it's just familiarity that makes me prefer it more.

Fair enough, I can only here the tiniest of differences.

Do you have the Antress Deathcore? Is it any good?

I don't know, I'll check. I have a trillion plug-ins that I've never even looked at.

Though I doubt I'd go for a plug called "deathcore" :lollers2:

The modern does sound louder. So that's the mix, not the compressor itself?

I tried to roughly match them in volume. But they might not have exactly the same threshold or make up gain.

Cheers. I've been looking for a mild vocal distortion for heavy tracks but haven't quite found what I'm after yet.

Yup, sorry, that's what happened. I see it rejected in my own email. I'll try another way.

Using it...and it sounds just like the other two!
I'm not sure what DS means. But it appears to make vert little difference anyway.

It might have a very mild saturation to it. But then this is also a pretty mild vocal - if I try with something more aggressive it might make more difference although I have set it up to get loads of gain reduction.
