Re: Lt Bob amp build - an alliance of superpowers
That is awesome man. Remarkable next level diy stuff that totally does it for me.
Im still glueimg frets Md making a fuckimg mess of that tele neck but god dam if im not learning tons as i go. Its fun. I love learning. Be way better if i had more chunks of free time however to work at stuff comsistently. But still.
I love all the diy ethic of everyone on these boards.

Nah ..... don't do that.Greg_L wrote: ↑Sat Aug 08, 2020 1:44 pm
With the flip-flop of part locations though, the AC plug in problem will be fixed, but the panel might now get in the way of the bias test points. I'll have to put it back together and check that. If so, I'll leave the socket there, hooked up to nothing, and install actual bias probe test sockets.
The only reason I didn't want an internal fuse is because that's something that could happen on a gig and you need to be able to change it quickly.
But I take amps apart for the hell of it and simply taking a back panel off is nothing.
Even if the back panel blocks the bias test point just leave it that way.
It's not like having to open up the amp ..... it's just pulling the back panel which i'd have to do to change tubes anyway.
And it's something that will be very rare or even never.
So I'd as soon you leave the bias test points in that socket even if the panel blocks it rather than having to find more places to drill holes in for test points.
I can pull a back panel off in my sleep.

Here's the power up vid. I actually did the actual slow power up already but didn't get any video. This is after the power socket/bias swap around.

Holy cow these videos are awesome ...... it's the birth of my amp!
Someday when there's a vid of me that amp'll be there and ya'll saw it nekkid!!
That's the chinese tubes that came with it right?
So it's not too surprising if they're not matched.
i think the JJ's are supposed to be matched.
I really like the repurposed outlet.

i think the JJ's are supposed to be matched.
And ya' know, I was thinking about this at the gig tonight and even if I wasn't changing tubes, adjusting the bias would require the back panel off to be able to reach the trim pot so it's perfect as it.
I really like the repurposed outlet.
Re: Lt Bob amp build - an alliance of superpowers
Those are the JJs in the vid. They're supposed to be matched, but they rarely ever are. It's ok though. They're not far off and it doesn't matter that much. A couple milliamps one way or the other is nothing.Lt. Bob wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 12:45 am Holy cow these videos are awesome ...... it's the birth of my amp!

The chinese tubes were way worse! But they did their job as guinea pigs for the very first firing up.
The repurposed outlet works great, and you can get to it with the panel still on. But you're right, you'll probably have to take the panel off to get to the trim pot, which you'd have to anyway to change tubes. The main thing is you don't have to remove the chassis to check and set the bias. The plate voltage never changes. It's 430 volts DC. Keep the bias wherever your ears like it between 16mv and 23mv and you're in the safe range.

I gotta tell ya...LSU fan bias aside, this thing looks fucking killer. I love it. It's very simple looking but in a good way.

it's awesome for sure and even though Greg is the guy who's doing all the amp-magic, he also strongly influenced the aesthetics.
We would have prolly gone Mojotone for the amp except for the yellow panel.
I had already picked out the gold grill cloth for the head and speaker cab which led to Greg pointing out that Weber had a yellow panel available.
Could only get that at Weber and I was on the fence about it until Greg suggested using purple chicken heads.
I hadn't thought of that at all and once he mentioned it, that was it!
Yellow panel with purple chicken heads.
Nothing was gonna shake me from that!
Now he's wishing he had done that to his amp!

Lol I put very little thought into my own amp's looks. I just told my wife to pick a color and a grill cloth and went with it.Lt. Bob wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 1:22 pm it's awesome for sure and even though Greg is the guy who's doing all the amp-magic, he also strongly influenced the aesthetics.

I tell you this....after your amps I'm gonna build a Blonde era Bassman clone for myself in an old combo I have laying around. That thing is gonna get new tolex and everything. It's gonna be snazzy!

Re: Lt Bob amp build - an alliance of superpowers
it looks really good guys. Sounds good too i just checked it out. Is the grill cloth gold Lt. Bob or is it just the lighting in the photo. I know it shouldnt remind me of old school Joker (batman) motif but it kind of looks like am amp the Joker would play and thays pretty cool. I kind of need the hear the old batman theme come out of that thing some time.
No offense to the true signifinigance of the theme.
I gotta ask. Where did you find the purple chicken heads?

It's like the regular Fender cloth that has the silver-bluish threads but gold instead.
You can get the chicken heads from most of the parts suppliers ...... these came from Tubes and More I think. Maybe the Tube Depot.
