Old kid in town

Howdy from Hong Kong. You may already know me from elsewhere and elsewhen …

Been meaning to sign up here for a while, but kept forgetting. The recent sad news about minerman reminded me that TRR existed, so here I am.
So sorry to hear about his untimely departure; reading through the forum, it seems like he was a talented guy, well liked and appreciated here. I remembered his username from HR, but never really got to know more about him.
I frequent very few forums these days; some of the old ones just aren’t what they were, and I haven’t found many others that have appealed to me.

Doing the guitar synth/amp modelling thing for nearly 30 years, and over the past little while, I figured it was about time I got back to my roots. I’ve had the opportunity to pick up a few amps in HK that I can’t wait to crank and record, so I am heading back into more of a stripped down sound that’s more about tone and the dynamics of playing with a minimal signal chain, rather than a processed digital facsimile. Still like my synths though

This should be a good place to hang out, as I know there’s a lot of great ears and talent here.

Will also be moving back to Canada in summer 2021 and likely retiring from my career working abroad, so I’m in the preparatory phase of having my basement finished and creating a small studio space. Won’t be much, but at least I will have a dedicated space to create that is more sonically isolated and properly treated. A small den in Hong Kong shared with a teenage gamer ain't all that.

Looking forward to perusing the threads and participating when I can.

Hong Kong? Good plan perhaps to get out of there at some point. I have a (now ex-) work colleague who's just started a new job there. He obviously has a liking for adventure.

The difference with this place is that, whilst we hang out down below in The Minerman Mountain Dew Lounge and annoy the crap out of each other at times, everyone here is actively involved in music in some fashion - recording, playing, instrument building etc. Not really the same over at HR any more, quite a few just there for chat and who only ever post in Prime Time - sort of how this place came to be, really.

Anyway, good to have someone who's in a more "normal" time zone for a change. [mention]rayc[/mention] and I are the token Australians, [mention]Ausrock[/mention] too, but he's not here that much of late. Place can be a little dead from about 8am Aus time for 12 hours or so - and picks up when I'm asleep. Story of my life...

The other advantage we have over HR is a far superior emoji selection.

I frequently pop in a few times a day, just choose not to say much while I'm dealing with med issues that has my doc scratching his head and trying to get the "system" to be helpful. Over the last 15 months I've lost a lot of my strength, stamina, body mass, etc., and there's not much of me to start with .......all started with a nasty gastro virus. Have not touched guitar for almost 12 months but staying hopeful.

Also good to have others in the same region for sure. I remember back in the days when I was in Seoul, dobro and I were often online at the same time when he was in Singapore and we got to know each other. Those were the RP days too ...

Man, it’s been nice living here, but having such a small space really makes you value your room.
I really can only keep one amp out at a time, and the others sit in my bedroom until I want them.
But jam rooms here are cheap and awesome. So at least you can get out and crank up the jams every so often.

Are you finding that there are great deals to be had on gear in hong Kong or would you say it is on par with the rest of the world?

As for gear, there is potential for some great deals if you are prepared to wait for the right thing at the right price (or lowball and hope).

Epi LP Custom (SG style with 3 pups)
Baby Taylor (US made before they moved production)
Reverend Thundergun Bass
VOX AC15HW1 (Greenback)
VOX AC30HW2X (Alnico Blues)
VOX V212NT cab (Anniversary G12H)
H&K Tubemeister 18 Head
A couple nice Ukes
A few pedals and a pedal board
Roland GK3b (Bass pickup for synth)
Roland EC10 ElCajon
Assorted cables and stuff

Total for ALL of this has been under CAD$5K (so what, maybe $3.5K US ?). Even sold some stuff that netted me more than I paid for it many years ago so it brings the price down.
Hasn't been a zero sum game, but I am confident I could unload anything for more than I paid in Canada (but I love it all).
Need to retap my transformers in the ACs for 110v, but that's not a problem. The H&K is already 110.
What IS expensive are American made guitars (PRS, Gibson, Fender and other artisan things), and Marshall/Mesa and boutique Amps.
Will have to go into the OT forums - no point shootin my load here...

Yeah - while I can make some noise here. I need to plan that time ahead. So, its great for me to be able to write, practice and record with the cab emulation and then record for real with it cranked up through my cab. It also means I generally have my parts pretty well practised by the time I record my final takes.
