De-essing

Post by JD01 »

I've never really bothered with it before... however, one of the contributors on the podcast that I've ended up as defacto producer of could do with a bit of de-essing.

Anyone got any tips for de-essing? Links to an easy to use free de-esser VST? Or instructions for what the hell I'm supposed to do with the Reaper de-esser.

You should here this guy say Spain!

A de-esser is just basically a single band EQ compressor. Find where the sibilance bad. Grab a bad phrase or syllable and loop it. Do an EQ sweep and see what frequency is the shitty one. Set the deesser to clamp down right there, and then set your threshold, attack, and release.

Yeah. It's the setting the de-esser I haven't worked out yet. Side chaining and that bollocks.

Just try it. You'll have it figured out in 5 minutes at most.

There are a bunch of them & it is a compressor most often triggered by an EQ. Reaper's DIY de-esser works quite well and can be better aimed than most. It's not as good as post recording manual work but fast and efficient anyway. The 1st half od this show how to set one up and leave it in your template the 2nd half is the manual method.

Yeah, I'll try and make the time to play with it later. Just don't have much time to spare right now. Thanks.

Ah, that makes sense too Ray. I'll see if that's any easier than using ReaDe-esser
