Recording Challenge #6 - I’m All About Dat Bass

Post by CrowsofFritz »

This is more a composition challenge than a recording one, but I figured it will be fun for people and it’s not complicated at all.

The idea I’m thinking is that you must come up with a bass line, and then record a song around that bass line. No using guitar chords to help you out. The more complicated the bass line, the more points you get.

Bonus points if you post the bass line first before the completed song to prove that you made a bass line and are working around it.

This will be a challenge for me because I always start with guitar chords or humming in my head and match it on guitar. I’ve never started a song like this.

Whatcha think?

Uh... done I guess
https://www.homodeprecatus.com/sites/ho ... rajhad.mp3

I recorded that one back in 2007. I laid down 2 bass parts and was about to record some guitar when I realized there was no more room in the mix for guits!

Alternatively, this playlist from February was entirely written on my modified bass: https://soundcloud.com/regdar-and-the-f ... -fawm-2020
Does playing chords on the bass count?

I'll be able to knock out challenges 5 and 6 in one go, then :)

I conceive about half of my songs doing this, and my idea for challenge 5 was started around a bass riff. Two birds with one stone!

I should be able to get in on this.

Sounds fun.

I have a project I have to complete for school that is time sensitive, so it may be a couple of weeks before I get to this though.

Honestly, for the 2007 recording, I don't recall for sure.

I think at the time I had a Bassballs and possibly another distorting phaser. Sounds like I might have double-tracked one of the lines too.

For the stuff from February, just distortion.

Your bass tone sounds good, Crows. Should be a good start

Reminds me a bit of something off the first black sabbath record.

Well here it is. Definitely not my genre. I had no clue what to do with this. I may get back to it and add stuff and make it longer and have a proper the chorus. But I don't think it's half bad!

I just did exactly that. Alas the song's not finished and I don't have time to do another one... :frown:

Here's my bassline. It was recorded in 2010 as part of a trck called Stalker.

Unfortunately I lost all the old plugins from that mix so I had to mix it all again. Drumming courtesy of Jamstix Percussion

Here is the thing I came up with, going to just run with it because I need something to do on this rainy day. I wont use this exact take, this is just to demonstrate the idea.
