Recording Challenge #5 (One Condensor Mic!)

Post by liv_rong »

EDIT: THIS IS THE CHALLENGE

Ok, the rules will be simple. One condenser mic for everything. Has to be the same mic. No DI anything. No samples. No drum machines(unless you run it through a speaker and mic it).

Basically all sources must be captured with the same condenser mic.

Can we make a "normal" recording challenge now? One that isnt all nerdy? One accessible to normal people? I need something to do and I am pretty confident most of us have a lot of additional time on their hands at the moment.

A couple ideas I have:
-can only use one condenser mic for the whole song

-use a bass amp for guitar and a guitar amp for bass

-got a practice amp? Use that for the guitars

-a no drums song

I dont know, lets do something though!

I have to admit that I stalled on my attempts at challenge #4. I love the concept but I haven't been able to actually come to terms with how I'm gonna do it.

Without giving up on #4, I agree its time for a new idea to get us all behind our instruments and gear. I've got an idea for a challenge. I'm pretty loosey-goosey with the concept though. I like Liv's ideas, so I'll hold mine for a future go-around.

I just got a new condenser so this could be a good use of it. I'm in.

I gotta start a new song in the next week or so.
I've got a lot of constraints right now, so depending on the challenge it may or may not work.
Single condenser I could do except that it'll be the stereo mics on my Tascam.
Bass/guitar amps reversed is feasible, but they'll be sims.
No drums would be a philisophical conundrum and possibly force me to do 2 songs this month.
Practice amp would be ironic because every recording I did between 2011 and 2019 used a practice amp on bass, and everything I've recorded since February is no amps.

I got that AT4047. Well, I say I "got it". I haven't paid the guy yet. :lollers2:

Sounds fun.

Is it everything on the list in the OP, or just one that hasn’t been nailed down yet?

I’m afraid I don’t own a bass amp (I already play bass through my guitar amp), and I don’t own a practice amp either.

I am not sure.

I thought the suggestion was to limit yourself in some way.

If that's the case then I'll limit myself to only using my 12-strings including for distorted leads.

Acoustic guitars only, no electric guitar or bass - that would be a challenge for y'all... :lollers:

Lots you can do with that, if you have to.

I think I might do an acoustic song with a miced bass and hand percussion.

I would have no problems with this. Maybe we do this for the next one?

I think I'll give this one a shot. I'll start working on it.

I also like the acoustic challenge as well.

This is actually a really good challenge. It's actually a recording challenge as opposed to a songwriting/creativity challenge.

I'm looking forward to this one.

Sounds like a good idea. Hopefully I will come up with something.

I might try to do it all with a SDC to make it even harder.

This will interesting for me. The only amp I have at home right now is my Bugera 50. And not a percussion instrument in sight.

I do have a song picked out though.

May have to get creative with percussion sounds.

Should be fun!
