My monitors just died

Post by JD01 »

Dunno what it is yet.
Tiny pop/click when I went to turn them on this morning and they didn't turn on.
Its not the fuse - I popped the fuse from my mini-bass amp in there and they still didn't work.
I also popped the fuse from the monitors in the mini-bass amp and that did work.

I don't know how sealed they are yet, but I'm going to try and open them up to perform a bit of surgery later if I can see anything obvious.
Anyone know what could possibly have gone wrong and/or what I should be looking for.

Both monitors died at the same time? Seems fishy.

Well the "active" bit is on in one of them. The other is just a passive speaker than runs from the other one.

Do they power on and just not make sound?
Or do they not even power on?
Does the passive monitor turn on?

No. They don't power on or do anything now. It's like they're not even plugged in.
The passive monitor doesn't have any sort of on/off. It's a totally passive speaker.

Oh right, sorry, duh.

Are they on a power strip? Start at the wall. Do other things plugged into that outlet work?

Yeah, so they're plugged into the multi-plug which is plugged into the wall. Everything else plugged into that multi is working fine.
I have another fuse test to do now, anyway.

I know you don't have this in the US, but in the UK, we have fuses actually in the plugs where we plug shit in.
However, on the back of my monitor there's also a mini-fuse.

I tested the one at the plug ('cos they're the ones that normally go) but the one in there was 10A. The little fuse in the back of the monitor is only 3A. So I'm gonna try replacing that next.

I would think a 3A would blow before a 10A, but sure, check them all.

Plug the monitor elsewhere.

what about the power supply for the monitors?
And the 3A would go LONG before the 10A

Yeah - I'm gonna replace the little 3A fuse next.
Unfortunately while every plug attached to anything in the UK has a fuse in it you can whip out and check, the little pop out mini-fuses like in the back of the monitors are a little harder to come by so I've gotta go out an buy one. If this is the problem I'll also change the fuse in the plug to a lower ampage so that it should go before the one in the monitors.

Hmmm, well I've changed the fuse... no dice.
I can't think what else obvious it could be.

Plug the monitor into another outlet. Then when that does nothing, unplug it and open that bitch up.

Tried that, I'm just trying to find another kettle lead to see if that's the issue.

Right - its not the socket, its neither of the fuses and its not the kettle lead.
Something has gone wrong inside there.

Shit.

you can just check the fuse for continuity before going out and buying one.
Do you have a multi-meter?

No, I don't. And a fuse is only about 50p anyway.

The one in the speaker protects the unit. They're usually called anti-surge fuses and you have to get the right rating and the right type. The one in the plug is there to protect the cable from overheating and should be a bit higher than the max. current draw based on the wattage of the equipment.

Well... neither of them have blown. Something else has gone wrong... and I might need new monitors.
