New DAW Day

Post by musicturtle »

I know most of you use Reaper but Cubase upgrades are 50% right now. Gonna get Cubase Pro for half price($225) There are some features and VSTs I really want to try.

Cool. Let us know how you get on. That's actually more expensive than a reaper license I think though, which is why reaper makes so much sense.

Hey you enjoy that musicturtle Lord Knows we need more diversity in here in terms of daw's lol.

JD makes a point i won't argue with but you can't put a price on what you are comfortable using. I overpayed for my jeep Patriot when i really could have gotten by with a Deux Chevaux by all the same logic. Keep us posted man.

Yeah, that's true. If you know it, it's probably best to stick with it.

Truth. I don't know why anyone would use anything but Reaper, but you gotta stick with what you know and what you like. Hell, they're all the damn same anyway.

I am actually surprised at how hard it is to try to even succesfully get someone to try reaper. Even me when when people suggested i switch i sort of dug my heels in but when someone told me how resource friendly it was on a computer that was what sold ot for me. I gave it a try and whoever suggested it wasnt kidding. My decision i guess came down to not really a matter of comfort but rather one more of necessity. Tye price also was a big player at the time as my finances really limited my options. Couldnt afford a new computer, and shelling out for the latest version of Nuendo made even less sense at the time given how the current version was crippling my pc.

So long post made short, we all switched from something what was it you switched from and why?

I think people are turned off from Reaper because they've never heard of it and/or the price makes it seem "cheap". That's how it always appears to me. I get asked all the time "what DAW do you use?" I answer "Reaper" and 99% of the time they've never heard of it. Everyone knows Pro Tools and Cubase and Garageband. And in many people's opinion, if you don't use a big name, you're somehow some kind of amateur. A lot of people that pay for studios want to know that they'll be using one of the popular brands. They don't know that it makes no difference.

One advantage of Pro Tools is that it's an industry standard and your projects can be opened and worked with anywhere that uses Po Tools.

I switched from Cubase to Reaper in 2007 and have never even considered going to anything else. It was not hard to make the switch for me because I don't use DAWs for more than 2% of their capabilities anyway. I don't even use shortcut keys. So for me, it's not that Reaper is just better than anything else because I don't believe it is. I just like it for me. I'd be the same with any DAW. I just prefer Reaper.

Cubase LE came with my Focusrite. I liked it and upgraded to Elements, their lowest paid for DAW. I have been using that for last two years, which is really when I started recording. I really like the chord track and sequencer for laying out reference tracks. I decided to upgrade this week to their Pro version because of the deal. Really want to try their comping tool for vocal tracks.

Tried Reaper a while back and just didnt do it for me. No explanation for it. I agree that if you find something, you like it, and it works for you...that is really what matters.

I will forever use Reason. I just like the layout of the virtual SSL console and my iPad can be a control surface, which I love. I want to get another iPad because the battery in this one is dying and I can use it for a different part of the console.

Congrats on the new purchase!

I agree with Greg, no one knows what Reaper is and I hate having to explain it every time someone asks. But, what do I care? Probably 90% of the people who ask dont do what I do anyways, record real instruments with microphones, so fuck em lol. I was using Acid before Reaper and I also kind of dragged my feet switching over. It was kind of because I was using it for so long its all I knew, and I barely even knew that. So switching for me was difficult. I also switched around 2007 or so I think. And I switched because I was using keygen for mine and then got a new computer and couldnt find a new key. So everyone was all about Reaper so I gave it a go.

I dont care what anyone uses with anything they do with music really. But really, for a home studio guy ProTools is fucking stupid and a waste of money. However, a lot of people probably think half of my gear is stupid do doing what I do so, to each their own.

I still remember those interfaces that only worked with a specific version of Pro Tools. Fuck that.

Before Reaper I was using Cool Edit Pro 2. I think it was on a recording forum called Home Recording Connection that Tadpui told me to get reaper... he also told me to get a Line 6 TonePort UX2... which I think was good advice at the time.
