Why subscribe for plugins?

What’s the point of subscribing for plugins instead of outright buying them?

I guess if you want to have them for a one time project or something?

I think it's a terrible new development for the consumer and it probably shows that creating/selling plug-ins is not profitable unless you can get people to keep paying for them forever.

It's the way all software is going. Have a look at Adobe in particular. I don't think I've ever actually paid for a plug in. There are always people creating really good stuff for free or on limited trial. I did all the mastering on the last album with new, free software - or if not free, available for free for a month which was all I needed.

I can see the benefit if you're a studio, maybe, but not for us hobbyists.

Its similar to the way that not many people buy music anymore, but lots of people subscribe and stream it.

Not sure if streaming/subscriptions will end up being sustainable in the long term, but buying stuff and having your own library doesn't seem to be viable anymore either 'cos the producers are shit scared of piracy. Will be interested to see how it plays out and what happens - I'm just interested as I think it has wider implications for the production of music in general.

I never update anything either - I've got a bunch of stuff that works (Mostly standard reaper stuff) and that's it.

Hardware would be great - pricey though! Which suppose illustrates the problem. I want those distressors that Tadpui has but I don't want to pay for them. I want a plugin that does what they do. I bet I'm not willing to pay enough for a plugin though to make it worth people developing one.
