Black Tusq

Post by WhiskeyJack »

Anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing?

I feel like a "self lubricating" nut smacks of marketing gimmick but i can't help but wonder what this is all about?

Meh. I had one in my Strat that I hate. It was okay. It didn't do anything magical.

Fair enough. I didn't figure as much. Just figured i'd ask as it sort of baffled me and the shop guy seemed to be pratttling on like he didn't really know was special about it either.

I have a Tusq nut on my Crimson. Its alright, better than bone? Dunno. I was spending so much on the guitar that saving a few quid on a nut seemed pointless.

I have one on my Stinnett ..... it's a nut .... works.

I've never found nuts to be a big deal ... even the cheapo plastic ones work fine for me.

So I don't dislike it ...... wouldn't care is my next guitar had one ..... wouldn't care if it didn't.

Real Tusq is pretty much bone so it is good for a nut. No better than bone for self lubricating. A little harder to work. No real advantage over bone..

Now........ graph tech tusq is snake oil. Its ok but no better than bone. Wayyy more expensive.

Black Tusq is "infused" with PTFE - the slipperiest substance on earth!

Lol. Their site reads like an infomercial.

20 years ago when tusq was just a bone/horn resin composite it was quite cool and its OK. Graph Tech have obviously taken it to a new level.... the slipperiest thing on earth however is my phone when I reach out to grab it off my workbench. I'm on my third screen this year...

:lollers: :lollers: That sucks mutt. Sorry about yer phones.

So tusq is a composite of two naturally occurring items? That is cool. I was thinking it may have been some sort of plastic industrial byproduct marketed for the guitar world. Very interesting. I should do a bit more research. :like: :like:

Tusq started life as a bone/horn/resin composite. I have no idea what else Graph Tech put in it now. Just go with bone or if you want black, go with horn... I have made horn nuts out of everything from reindeer antler to hoofs... all from the local pet store. No need to grind it up and mix it with resin. Its cheap and out there already.
