I watched that video over the weekend, and I thought he got a much larger improvement in the sound simply by tuning it properly than he did by putting on the new heads and snare wires.

Yeah - I agree actually. Its most clear at the end when he plays all three clips back to back.

Yeah, tuning it was a sea change.

I suspect he probably saved himself $40 in replacement heads by sanding down the rough edges!

I've done all of that to junk drums. I've told everyone since the beginning of time - just tune your fucking drums. Even junk drums will sound good with good tuning and heads.
