Rasp Recommendation
Rasp Recommendation
Mutt, can you give me a recommendation for a cheap rasp that will do the job.
I don't want to spend a fortune 'cos its mainly going to be for making my PRS less pointy, then I'm going sand it to get it nice and smooth before taking it to a body-shop.
Figured it would also be pretty handy for general DIY/decorating.

Re: Rasp Recommendation
I get the feeling that recently I am the go to guy for advice on how to f*tz up your guitar...
If you are dead set on hacking it about then take a pick of the guitar for me and describe what you want to do.. A rasp will probably be the tool to get you started but once you get close you need to move through some other cutting tools to get a finer and less ragged finish.. Sanding is only done once you have a perfectly shaped outline with no bumps or hollows...

Re: Rasp Recommendation
.....and why is this in the Studio section? I never come in here...
Re: Rasp Recommendation
Sorry, I was posting from my phone so I just went to DIY but ended up in studios.
Basically, I want a PRS headstock to end up shaped more like a Washburn wing headstock.
I’ll take a pic on the weekend, draw on my plan and take another pic.

Re: Rasp Recommendation
OK, I wrapped paper around the headstock and coloured it in with a sharpie - obviously I'd take a bit more time make sure its marked out symmetrically before I go re-shaping anything.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Re: Rasp Recommendation
maybe a Dremel tool ..... they have rasp bits available and then the finer grinding stone bits would smooth it out.

Re: Rasp Recommendation
I hear this does wonders for reworking PRS guitars:
Re: Rasp Recommendation
That's plan B when I accidentally saw the headstock in half
Re: Rasp Recommendation
Ok, you are cutting across end grain so what ever you do you want to be careful.
You want to scribe the line through the finish and onto the wood to avoid it chipping when you work to the line. The scribe line will be just visible when you finish and you will sand a very fine "ariss" to the edge (a round edge almost invisible but important to help the finish take). The hardest task will be keeping it square so if you know some one with a decent bandsaw buy them a beer and get them to cut it close to the line. If not you can do it with a coping saw but take it slow and check both sides as you go. The rasps would be used to finish it and you would go from a medium cut to a fine cut rasp. Just get a couple of decent half round ones. Most of mine are probably too expensive for a one off job and I rarely use them for that sort of thing... Finish with sand paper on dowels and blocks and seal the end grain before finishing.
Something like this would prolly do it...

Re: Rasp Recommendation
So,
1. scribe my outline into the current finish.
2. get pretty close to the scribe line with a band saw
3. get right up to the scribe line with a rasp.
4. Sand it all off to get it night and smooth.
5. Colour it in with sharpies.
